in movie-review •  8 years ago  (edited)

Beetlejuice (1989), Corpse Bride (2005), Coraline (2009), Sweeney Todd (2007), Alice in Wonderland (2010), Frankenweenie (2012), all of the film stop-motion animation and non-animation that was born from the hands of Tim Burton this always has a characteristic creepy, quirky, and gloomy. In fact, Batman (1989 & 1992) also has a thick atmosphere of horror when a touch of Tim Burton. Although not sit in the position of director, The Nightmare Before Christmas is so popular and memorable still has a characteristic style of Tim Burton and can be regarded as a starting point for a stop-motion animated film that will be born next homemade.

In a land called Halloween Town, all citizens which consists of the ghost, vampire, dracula, werewolf, until the witch, happy always celebrated Halloween (hence its name) to scare the use of their being creepy. Of all the citizens of Halloween Town, is Jack Skellington (Chris Sarandon) who recognized the scariest, and praised and honored by all the citizens of Halloween Town. But apparently, Jack started to feel bored with Halloween is always celebrated each year. One night, Jack, who has a skull shape is choosing to walk into the forest, accompanied by his ghost dog named Zero.

In the woods he found some trees with symbols representing holidays in each of them, such as Valentines Day, St. Patricks Day, Thanksgiving, Easter, Independence Day, Christmas, and of course do not forget Halloween. Jack then enters the tree with pine tree symbol (christmas) and he was thrown to the Christmas Town. Jack was so amazed with the celebration held in the Christmas Town. He felt happy, though not know how to explain it. Returning to Halloween Town, Jack plans to plan a celebration in Christmas Town and kidnap Sandy Claws / Santa Claus (Ed Ivory).

Two cities which became the setting here illustrated by stark contrast, Halloween Town so dark, gloomy, and gripping, following the creepy creatures who inhabit it, whereas Christmas Town is very bright, colorful, and full look at all the happiness. Yet both are still coexist with all the differences they have. In the end, boredom Jack screwed everything to kidnap Santa Claus. If judging deeper, what Jack actually is purely a 'delinquency' small that is created from an environment that is like with the things that are ignorance and annoyance, because it is part of Halloween.

The Nightmare Before Christmas presented musicals and only take place with a duration of 76 minutes. For a year, the film could be called was beyond his time. The process of making over three years, is a testament of the hard work in stop-motion filmmaking is so complicated. For example, the character Jack Skellington only use 400 different facial expressions. That's just one character, yet other characters. Of course, there are thousands of mini-figure that is used during the making of this film. The movement of frames per second is also very subtle, it is not wrong if the time used in the manufacture also very long.

The Nightmare Before Christmas is often called a sleeper hit, or a movie that is so well known for a very long period of time. It seems true. Look at the character Jack Skellington is so memorable and lovable, he always appears in a wide range of accessories or toys that are sold in many places. Moreover, the film is also a symbol of Halloween and Christmas which was a great holiday. This film will reportedly had made a sequel in 2001 with more computer animation instead of stop-motion. But then Tim Burton cited their 'purity' story and packaging should use stop-motion. I strongly applaud the decision of Tim Burton, because for me alone sequel is a kind of betrayal of a work.

Honestly, I am actually not typical buff musicals, except for Les Misérables (2012), which so far has been my passion. In fact, I got boring in some musical moments are presented in this film. But to plot overall, I think is pretty good though minus the funny moments. There is a moral message that I catch from this film about feelings to be yourself. Jack Skellington is bored with Halloween, trying to kidnap Santa Claus and play its role to distribute gifts on Christmas Eve. Previously, he had also been warned by her friend, Sally (Catherine O'Hara) that he was not personally during the time he knew. As a result, Jack even get into trouble as a result of the plan. Then she began to realize the importance of being yourself with a return to the previous and still celebrate Halloween.

I think this is as simple as this film tells the story. Although simple, but a moral message delivered quite striking. Maybe it's not my favorite, but The Nightmare Before Christmas is already in attainment as animated films are so popular, timeless, memorable, and so widely known. Overall, The Nightmare Before Christmas is quite entertaining with his character design is nice and unique, and if its motion with music that is so united and render outstanding. Servings are very fit to accompany his spare time on holiday.
