Zack Snyder's Justice League - Fun but not without fault.

I will be returning to more serious issues soon enough. But, for now, I will comment on the much-praised "Snyder Cut" of Justice League. Note: there are minor spoilers below (yes, SPOILERS):

  1. I'm not a big superhero movie fan. But, like most commentators, I thought this was a lot of fun to watch.

  2. The 4 hour length allowed for a lot more character development, which worked well. Much better in that respect than most of these movies.

  3. It was interesting to see Bruce Wayne/Batman try to be a leader and organizer, as opposed to the loner he usually is.

  4. While the heroes were well-developed, the villains were kind of lame and flat.

  5. Darkseid commits the classic "Evil Overlord" mistake of sending in his minions a few at a time rather than resorting to overwhelming force while his adversaries are still disorganized. It appears that, despite fighting battles on thousands of worlds, Darkseid never mastered elementary strategy, and never learned the principle of concentration of force. This is one of many superhero stories where good won in large part because evil was stupid. Perhaps he will read Clausewitz before the next movie in the series, and do better!

  6. Batman assembles the entire Hall of Justice, except for the Wonder Twins. What happened to them? Why were they left out? Their exclusion also means Wonder Woman is the only female member.

  7. By the end of the movie, it's hard to see how any halfway intelligent observer would have failed to figure out that Superman is actually Clark Kent.

  8. Bruce Wayne uses his fortune to save the Kent family farm from foreclosure. But he never bothers to spend some money to hire lawyers and private investigators to prove the innocence of the father of Barry Allen/the Flash. Nor does Barry think to ask this small (for Bruce) favor. Instead, he continues studying criminal justice to get himself into a position where - at best - it will take him years to get his father out of prison. Either Barry is too stupid to think of this (strange, given that he's portrayed as brilliant) or Bruce Wayne heartlessly refuses his request. Of course the real answer is that Snyder didn't think of it!

  9. This movie, like previous ones involving Wonder Woman (but even more so, because we see more of the Amazons), raises the question of how Amazons reproduce, given that they isolate themselves from men, and don't appear to have artificial insemination. Greek mythology offers some answers to this question. But they are not ones that fit easily with modern sensibilities. The Wonder Woman movies and earlier TV series sweep the issue under the rug, perhaps hoping viewers won't notice!
