"You are a toy"
Maybe "You are a toy" is one of the most popular phrases of the first installment of "Toy Story". It was the one Woody told Buzz several times when they got lost, so he assumed he was not a real astronaut, but a simple toy. What few know, is that the phrase was about to be the real name of "Toy Story".
A small protagonist
No one imagines "Toy Story" without Woody as protagonist. However, that was about to happen. It turns out that originally Pixar would use "Tinny", the character of his Oscar-winning short "Tin Toy" (1988), as a hero. The idea was to get lost on a family trip and to join a puppet with few lights on a trip to find his home.
An "unbearable" movie
In January of 1993 Disney gave green light to the project of "Toy Story", and ten months later Pixar gave an initial sketch of the film, which was a complete disaster and was even called "unbearable" by the study. According to the company, the film portrayed Woody as a "sarcastic idiot," in the style of John Wayne, and constantly insulting the other toys. Immediately Disney put the project on hold until a new script was written.
The requirement of Tom Hanks
When it came time to cast the "Toy Story" cast, the film's creators wanted Tom Hanks to be the voice of Woody for one of his scenes in the movie "Partners and Hounds" (1989) to a dog. He accepted, since during his childhood he wondered if his toys moved when he left his room. But not everything was so easy. The actor put a certain requirement to record his lines: it had to be while filming the films "Love tuning" and "A very special team", since he did not want to do it during "Philadelphia" or "Forrest Gump", because they were roles more serious.
Buzz or Lunar?
Everybody knows Buzz Lightyear, a toy that emulates an astronaut who travels the space in search of adventure. That's why it was originally going to have another name: Lunar Larry, however, the creators were finally decided by Buzz Lightyear, a name more to live up to this beloved character.
"The Mask" as Buzz
Pixar wanted Jim Carrey to give voice to Buzz Lightyear. But the film had a low budget (30 million dollars), insufficient to hire the comedian. Later the paper went to stop to Tim Allen.
The worst mistake of Billy Crystal
Before Tim Allen won the role of Buzz Lightyear, the role was offered to Billy Crystal, who declined the offer. After the success of the film, the actor regretted his decision and called it the worst mistake of his career. He later gave voice to Mike Wazowski in the production of Pixar, Monsters, Inc.
Mattel's rejection
Originally, the character of Little Bo Peep was going to be a Barbie. However, Mattel did not want his star doll to be in the movie The Reason? She did not want to be shown a definite personality, but she wanted the girls to imagine her as they wanted. When the film reached great success, Mattel took a step back and allowed Barbie to appear in the aftermath.
Soldiers to war
Mattel was not the only toy brand to refuse its participation in "Toy Story". Hasbro joined the decision when he did not want the popular G.I dolls to appear. Joe on tape. This was because Pixar wanted one of them to explode at the hands of Sid, Andy's neighbor known for his rudeness and for being a destroyer of toys.
The bad decision of Mattel and Hasbro
The two popular toy brands not only made the mistake of rejecting their toys in "Toy Story", but also declined Pixar's offer to have the rights to toys based on the characters in the film. In the end, the license was in the hands of the small Canadian company Thinkaway Toys, which maintains it until today.
