Just watched this again for the second time and I think something that strikes me about Baker's direction is his knack for pulling out little moments of clarity which underpin the entire barrative (or lack thereof). He catches the nuances of the non actors reactions with serious skill. On this second watch I was even more wrapped up in this little world even though I knew the outcome.
