Got Popcorn ? #4 Memento

in movie •  7 years ago

Hello Steemians !

This is a series where I review movies, in which I’m going to talk about films that I recently saw or that I particularly liked. I’m not a specialist in movies but I really love watching them.

A little disclaimer first, I really don't like movies with a really bad writing or story. If there is a lot of clichés it would be hard for me to really get into the story so you may say that I ask a lot from movies I watch ! Just to give you an idea, movies like Shutter Island, Fight Club or Inglorious Bastard are the kind that I really love.

Story

Pearce stars as a man who, as a result of a past trauma, suffers from anterograde amnesia, the inability to form new memories and suffers short-term memory loss approximately every five minutes. He is searching for the persons who attacked him and killed his wife, using an intricate system of Polaroid photographs and tattoos to track information he cannot remember.

Memento is presented as two different sequences of scenes interspersed during the film: a series in black-and-white that is shown chronologically, and a series of color sequences shown in reverse order (simulating for the audience the mental state of the protagonist). The two sequences meet at the end of the film, producing one complete and cohesive narrative.

Overall Impression

This is an amazing movie ! It’s really the kind that I like but I was quite dubious at first. I was afraid that it lacks in a good story but that's absolutely not true. Let’s start from the beginning, as you read in the story part, the movie is separated into two parts. The black and white part is the hardest to understand, even if it’s the one shown chronologically because you don’t really know what’s happening.

On the other hand, the colorful part was pretty tricky too as you go back in time each time a sequence appears. It’s really an exercise for your brain to follow a story starting with the end but the reward is worth the effort. I won’t tell you more about that but if you’re interested to know, it’s in the spoiling part.

The truly amazing thing with Memento is that during the whole film, you’ll be as the hero is, with memory issues. As the story is cut in two parts, each with a different chronological order, you’ll constantly try to remember each detail, each info you have to figure out what’s happening.

At the end, without spoiling anything, there is a huge plot twist. Such a huge one that after finishing the movie, the main thing you’ll want to do is watching it again ! With that little piece of information, the film has a whole other signification and all the clues have a different meaning. Trust me and just watch it !

Spoiler Alert

Things are about to get serious here and I don’t recommend you to read this, you’ll ruin a great movie for yourself. However, I understand your curiosity so here we go !

So you know that the main character is trying to find his wife killer, that’s basically what he’ll do during the whole movie but the interesting part is his surrounding. The other characters who will help him assemble the clues and go on for his search. You’ll suspect each of them and that’s the point of the movie, but as it continues it’ll get clearer and clearer. Finally, you’ll know that the bad guy you’re looking for since the beginning is the main character, as he already found and killed the murderer of his wife. Without any purpose for his life, he put himself on an infinite quest for a non-existent murderer.
