A Free Scotland?

This movie isn't bad, the action scenes are big, and what you would expect from a Hollywood movie. Gibson has also shown that he does have some talent when behind the camera as the director. Not a brilliant film, but not bad either.

The English rule Scotland and believe that they have impunity for all of their actions towards the Scottish people. One of the "privileges" that the English noblemen exercise is "Prima Nocte", or as they see it first rights to a mans wife on their wedding night.

When William Wallace attempts to marry in secret, the noblemen do find out and go about exercising their rights, his new wife however has other ideas and fights back. She is captured, and for her troubles executed in public.

William gathers his clan together and defeats the English garrison that are stationed in his hometown, so starts the war. William's defiance must be crushed, this doesn't prove to be as easy as the English would like. William manages to unite a number of clans and is victorious in a number of battles.

Things are going well but William needs more men, and seeks the assistance of a local nobleman whom is a possible contender for the Scottish crown. Who, smells a double cross coming? In essence a number of the Scottish nobility either align themselves with the English or a bribed, the result of the next battle is that the Scottish rebels are defeated.

William now wages a guerrilla war on the English and those that double crossed him. After seven years of warfare a meeting is setup between one of the Scottish nobleman and William. Anyone see another double cross coming? William is captured and handed over to the English.

William is tried for high treason, and sentenced to public torture followed by beheading. Defiant until the end, he never accepts English rule. A few years later the son of one of the Scottish noblemen double crosses the English and manages to win the Scots their freedom.
