Wage war without being in the same country

Helen Mirren is one of the actors that always seems to do excellent roles in excellent movies, I do not consider this movie to be an exception. I am not sure I could name a bad movie she has been in, in short, yes, I am a fan. Add to this Alan Rickman's last movie role before he passed away, and I was expecting this movie to do much better in the cinemas than it actually did. It seemed to there one minute and gone a week later.

If you haven't seen this movie it is about waging war on terrorists from afar, using drones for intelligence gathering, and strategic strikes to eliminate the enemy. Eye in the Sky follows Colonel Katherine Powell (Helen Mirren), whom is in charge of a secret drone operation. The operation is designed to gather intel from the drones, combine this intel with local intel from troops on the ground and then formulate an appropriate response.

However, as with any plan, spanners can get thrown in works at the last moment. In this particular movie, the intel indicates that terrorists are planning a suicide bombing. Time now to eliminate the threat, something that should be easy to do until the spanner gets thrown in.

In this case, it is in the form of a child wondering into the kill zone. Now the question becomes do we continue with the mission and kill one innocent child saving many others, or do we abort the mission, save the child and risk everyone else? Does "the good of the many outweigh the good of the few or the one " (from Star Trek, Spock)?

Alan Rickman, has one of the movies best lines which is "Never tell a soldier that he does not know the cost of war." This is a thought provoking film, and not just your typical Hollywood movie, could be why it didn't last at the cinema. Definitely worth getting the DVD and watching.
