Movie Review: Captain Marvel (2019)

in movie •  6 years ago  (edited)

After 10 years and 20 films, the first female superhero in the MCU finally got her own solo movie. And this before the big finale, before the gigantic endgame, to which the MCU was steered.

Non-fans, if they haven't informed themselves before, will have their difficulties with the character of Captain Marvel. Captain Marvel is a complicated character and also part of the well known superheroes of the MCU and is surely a member of the Avengers. The figure was for the first time drawn in 1937. Later the character was became part of Marvel and 1967 he got his first entrance in the Marvel world. The very first Captain Marvel figure was a man. Later this character died and passed on his superhero status and so it came that also a woman took over this role with the Name Ms. Marvel. More later the creators decided to give her the name Captain Marvel back. And exactly this episode we see in the new Marvel Movie.

That means that the Marvel Studios didn't start to show new superheroes in female form, but it is exactly the story that is told in the comics, of course better tuned to the audience. Moreover, Captain Marvel is one of the most powerful characters in the whole Marvel universe, comparable to Superman from the DC Comics, but as a non fan, you can't know that, of course.

The Story:

The ancient alien races of the Kree and the Skrull have been at war for eons. In 1995, in our time, Vers, her mentor Yon-Rogg and a few other Kree set out on a mission where they were ambushed by the Skrull. Vers is captured by the Skrull and they try to get informations out of her memories. Vers can free herself and flee to earth, where she begins to get her true identity out. Gradually she discovers that she has been used by the Kree and her mentor and is in the middle of a conspiracy.

Together with the young S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Nick Fury, Vers tries to solve the mystery of her origin. But they have to hurry, because by her stay on earth the war between the Kree and the Skrull will also come to earth...

My Opinion:

Old comic book fans knew who Nick Fury called at the end of Avengers Infinity War, just before half of the life in the whole universe disintegrated. For non fans the Captain Marvel movie is a good enlightenment and also a good pre-story, which makes the endgame against Thanos more exciting. Captain Marvel is an Origin Story, as we know it from the MCU, but packed a bit differently. Because the hero doesn't even know who she is and where she gets her powers from. The movie starts without a real pre-story as you are used to it. Again and again there are memorabilia of the heroine, which are dissolved with time until the end of the movie.

The movie isn't really a masterpiece from Marvel's house, as you usually know it from other movies of the brand. The characters are too superficial and there is simply no depth to cheer for the heroine played by Brie Larson. Nevertheless, Brie Larson does her job very well in her Kick-Ass lead role and always gets into a brave fight. She shows little or no weakness, knows how to stand up again and again and always has a smile on her face. We have never seen another hero in the MCU before like her- so tough she is.

The whole 90s flair in the movie also comes out very well with corresponding music. You see a Game Boy, Windows 95, too long loading CD-Roms and much more, which gives a nice feeling to a generation where i count myself. You can hardly see the rejuvenation of Samuel L. Jackson through CGI and all this is mixed with aliens and their high-tech trying to destroy this world.

As I already mentioned, the movie isn't a masterpiece but also not a flop. It starts off well at the beginning, but then takes a long break, where there is always a switch between the 90s and the aliens with their high-tecch and builds on an explosion, where at the end everything the movie missed before, is caught up.

I don't know but I think that this was done consciously and despite the new narrative style, the makers probably didn't want to experiment too much. Especially because Endgame will tie in directly with this movie. Maybe it was because they didn't want to take Endgame the air out and they serve Captain Marvel as an appetizer before the real main menu was served, which everyone was waiting for!

You should definitely have to watch Captain Marvel if you want to understand who Nick Fury is calling with the pager at the end of Infinity War and why this character will play an important role in the future of the MCU.

Because Captain Marvel the movie is like a snack for in between, it got a corresponding rating from me of only 7 stars at IMDb - if I could, I'd give it 6.8 stars.

7 stars isn't so bad for a pre-story of Captain Marvel, but I hope the next in April will reach 10 stars. I'm so excited about the next movie (ENDGAME) in the MCU.

The hardest thing about Endgame will be that it will be the end of a chapter but it will also be the beginning of something completely new - where the old elements will meet new ones. The MCU couldn't have found a better one than Kevin Feige for this job!

I'm a bot. I detect haiku.

I thought it was a decent movie and I laughed a few times during it.
The ending was the best though. :D

Captain Marvel didn't generate much buzz over here like the other avengers movies, I didn't know it was out until last week. I'll try to make out time to see it next week.

yeah, sometimes things like thats happens :)

She has lots of young man admirer. Another valuable assessment from you. Following you is exciting. Thank you.

Me Gusto demasiado este post. la verdad que no sabia nada sobre esta pelicula la cual me gustaria ver

I avoid watching movies which have a virtue signaling agenda.

Then you also had your problems with the movie Black Panther? That was a movie with black ideology and also an agenda. :))))

The movie wasn't made for me. Unfortunately I was shown high levels of prejudice from Bri Larsen and I can't in good conscious watch this movie. Normally I would separate the actor from the film, however, even Kevin Fogey said this was meant to be a feminist film. Modern day feminism is nothing like its origins. It hates people like me because I'm a white man who is a Conservative Libertarian. I'm very saddened that Marvel is now putting far left agenda and propaganda in their films. Been a fan since I was a child. Looking like it is time to grow up and stop caring about super hero movies. Especially if Bri Larsen is the face of the MCU from here on out! Endgame is Marvel's last chance from this die hard fan who has been supporting Marvel for 30 years. I have almost the full set of the first edition card set, holograms and all. Thousands of comics, all will make a great kindling for a Youtube/dtube video. I would rather take the value I have in Marvel merchandise and burn it out of the economy as a whole than to support Marvel/Disney and their future plans.

Thanks for posting it on steemit tho!

@zainenn thats too bad to hear. Especially because you are a hard fan like I am. I also have comics from the late 80s and early 90s, collectible cards and other stuff from marvel.
But I'm also someone who's not political and doesn't care about politics and all the stuff around it.

If I were you, I would store all the stuff you have somewhere and later bequeath it to your descendants. That's my plan, too.

Yeah I'd imagine if I didnt care about government interfering with my life, I wouldn't be bothered by the political agenda within films either. So many spider man comics... I have the whole Infinity War and Infinity Guantlet series'. I really hope this doesn't become the norm for Marvel.

After Phase 4 a lot will change and some unknown superheroes will find their way into the MCU. You know it, I know it: there are female superheroes, there are african, hispanic, latino, native, asian, russian, jewish, arabic muslim superheroes, there is so much in the marvel universe... some of them will sooner or later find their way into the MCU. Sure, not all of them are part of the Avengers but part of the Marvel World. But the change has a lot to do with economics and marketing and not really to do with politics. It's the zeitgeist. The world is globalizing and continues to turn. To ignore that means to stand still. :)

I would never argue against other nationalities, races or genders, that has absolutely nothing to do with my complaint and reasons for making Endgame the MCUs last chance to not include politics in their movies before they lose me. Nothing to do with anything you just mentioned. Why would you say that? I would not object to the introduction of new characters of different races, ethnicities, religious. There have been many female super heroes, anyone who thinks there aren't have bought into the propaganda and talking heads. Rogue was my favorite female hero. I'm not happy they are making pure leftist propaganda films. Before they didnt have politics in the movies, at the very least not as blatantly. I miss entertaining movies, not all these movies shoving the Hollywood propaganda down our throats.

I also loved Rogue when I was a kid! ;)))

Hollywood is just a propaganda machine. And it spreads idiologies and ideas. Marvel and other comic publishers were used before the 2nd world war also for war propaganda but after that this trend calmed down and it became more open. Some characters in the comics are as they are. Some storys and figures address topics that are still topical today. I find it quite normal that these things are also used in the movies.

I also can't understand why some men feel caught by a strong independent woman? This Brie Larson is a feminist-propaganda is created by such men. The movie itself is not feminist. Is this whole thing created just because Brie Larson/Captain Marvel beats up some men in the ass in the movie and is quite strong and because of that most people get scared of her? This doesn't make her a feminist. Or is it because Captain Marvel will soon replace Captain America in the movies and some have a problem with a woman taking the command now?

Dude, this whole controversial Brie Larson is a feminist, Captain Marvel is a feminist and a danger for the world of the men is complete bullshit, which is still stirred up by the media and some politicians who still use it for their stupid politics...

Dont follow that ;)

Nope none of that, haven't seen it, like I said. Now I feel you aren't even reading my comments. I have no problem with strong women, I'm quite attracted to them. Never claimed any of those talking point you regurgitated. Marvel was never a leftist organization, now it is. Ignoring Bri Larsens terrible opinions about men as a whole or not acknowledging they exist, does not help anyone. Done with this conversation, be well.
