The appetite for more knowledge, influence, and wealth has been an Achilles heel for humanity for centuries. The stories are told to us, over again, conditioning, and reminding us as to who we are, and what we are becoming. Popular culture repurposes media creations for many reasons, one being that the target audience is familiar with the old context concerning the new.
Popular culture is the blood source of all media creations. The educated and elite seem to be exiled from all hopes of ever experiencing the joy of creating original content. Everything we see in the media, or hear on the radio has come from something seen before, but with a twist. Since cinema’s beginnings, the replaying of narratives and genres has been a constant reminder of that.
Movie spoilers after this point
Older media that has evolved from writings and theater comes with many life lessons. (George Langelaan, "The Fly ", 1958) Frightened audiences around the world. The film reminded me of a mystery romance novel centered around a small, well to do family. Wife, Helene Delambre, played by actress Patricia Owens, confesses to the murder of her scientist husband Andre Delamere, played by David Hedison. Delamere’s discovery takes a turn for the worse when he conducts a test on a plate, realizing that the teleporting device he devoted his entire adult life to, actually works.
Fascinated by the result, Delambre decides to experiment on the family cat, then himself. What’s significant about this movie is it carries a message to the audience about the dangers of science. What I found relevant about this film is that the media seems to be warning viewers about teleportation and time travel. Dramatic warning in movies has a tendency to play right into the pockets of millions.
