I have a 5 year old son, so I know a thing or two about the crap that is pushed onto our children in terms of entertainment media. Most of it is banal, worthless tripe to get kids to conform to a prevailing narrative. There is no sense of moral lesson or education of virtue.
Disgusting.
When I first turned on Angry Birds for my son to watch, I was expecting the same thing. But I'm pleased to say I was very surprised.
Aside from being filled with cultural references that parents who have kids of the age of the target audience of this movie would find extremely amusing (aka: 80s and 90s), it has a brilliant lesson about preservation of one's own culture from invading forces who wish to subvert and steal.
But back to the cultural references, this is one of my favorites:
Other than these things, I can speak as an animator that the quality of the animation is top-notch. The fundamentals of animation are taken to a masterwork level in this film -- there is nothing bad about it.
And on top of that, in contra-distinction to a movie like Moana, where there is a small cast of characters who are sparsely developed beyond their historical motivation, Angry Birds is filled with unique, compelling, and relateable individuals who are fun to watch every second of this delightfully colorful movie.
In summation, Angry Birds is a movie that is not only good for children to watch (if you're going to have them watch anything) because it will hold their attention and deliver a sound and true message that is honorable and will endure in their minds as they grow, but it is also an amusing and heartwarming film for adults to watch.
And if you don't want to just take my word for it, here's Stefan Molyneux's review:
Check it out on Netflix before it's gone.
And follow @shayne
The Twin Green things.... oh wow. How can they get away with that one? Now that was a truly scary (1980) movie.

Yeah, the movie is literally filled to the brim with stuff like that. It's in the background (like the lead image of this post), hidden in cleaver bits of dialog, and right in your face like the twins from The Shining -- they even said "redrum" lol
I assume you haven't seen it?

I have not seen angry birds. I can still remember the first time I saw the Shining though. Watched it on video with a lot of high school friends and I was still quite scared after. A true horror movie. The casting was great. Anyway I think it is neat when a modern movie can slip in all sorts of past cultural references. In theory I could end up seeing Angry birds with a niece of a nephew so I won't look too much into it now in order not to spoil it for myself (just in case).
