Wild Rose - Movie review

in movie •  5 years ago

Last night my other half and I had to vacate the house as our daughter was having some friends over. We were not particularly inspired by the movie offerings, but decided to give Wild Rose a try. We saw it at the Broadway in Letchworth. Dinner beforehand was at Wildwood which was nice enough, but very similar to many other pizza restaurants. There are four serving Italian food on one short street there.

This movie is a more realistic portrayal of the quest for fame than you will see generally. Rose-Lynn Harlan (played very well by Jessie Bluckley) is just out of prison and going back to her two young children. Life is hard and very un-glamorous, but she desperately wants to be a country singer.

Rose has to work out where her priorities lie. She is by no means perfect and lies her way through life. Her long-suffering mother (Julie Walters) tries to make her see sense.

This could be described as a 'gritty' movie. It is set in Glasgow and few concessions are made with the accents. I struggled to understand them at times. The characters live in real houses and I'm not sure much of it was shot in studios (but I could be wrong). It has comedy moments too and I did not find it too depressing. It made me smile a lot.

A big part is played by music and it is all country as you might expect. Jessie has a great voice and they used some real Scottish musicians for her band, including Phil Cunningham who we saw perform a couple of Christmases ago.

There is a lot of swearing, some sex and drugs, so maybe not one to watch with your young kids.

I would recommend it to music fans even if country is not your thing. I just wonder if it will need subtitles for some markets.

It looks like an interesting movie. I just need to see if there is a version of it with subtitle in italian language (I have some problems to understand the dialogues without them ^_^).

I think a lot of people would need subtitles. I expect they will have them to reach a wider audience

Very nice! This looks like it could be a really good movie to watch. I appreciate your review. I just watched "The Dirt" last night with my wife. That is definitely not a movie to watch with your kids. It was an interesting movie about Motley Crue though.

I saw that is on Netflix. I may watch it some time

I'll have to check this out @steevc though I'll wait until it's on a streaming platform, as I'm not really one for going out to movies, as I'm usually disappointed in the amount it costs to see things.

Fair enough. An evening out can get expensive, but it's nice now and again.

Sounds like my kind of film, that and your description of 'gritty'. I'm not taken much with Hollywood stuff these days.

This is definitely not Hollywood. Made me think of Gregory's Girl a bit, even though it's a different topic. It's about realistic people in real situations, but of course what happens cannot be too ordinary to make it a fun movie.

Ah Gregory's Girl is HootMon's fave movie. being shot in Cumbernauld may have been a factor!

hi @steevc, did you see the recent power down and sellings made by several whales and devs? Val-a for instance, and steemit itself, what are your thoughts about it? i saw the interview to the new leader m the woman, was tod practically fired? thanks

I don't follow all of that. Steemit and others may need the money to fund their operations and so powering down is a valid move. Of course it may not be the best time to do it. I am concentrating more on the community and the projects that make Steem a better place to be.

I understand, was Ned put away from his leadership?

I have no idea what he is doing now. I expect he still has control, but may have let other people take over some of what he did.

Give Chris Stapleton a listen or Aaron Lewis. I love me a bit of country!

It's not my regular listening, but I do like a bit of Johnny Cash. We get a few country songs at the pub.
