ADSactly Movies - Lessons from Movies #2: In Time (2011)

In Time

This movie is many things, and boring is not one of them because the action will continuously keep you hooked, new conflicts being created at all times and its philosophical meaning will always give you something to think about.

If people only look at the surface, they will probably consider it a love story where the good guy tries to save the world, fighting the villains and meeting a girl that is going to help him thrive in the end. But as you get closer and look past the exterior, deep down at the heart of this movie you will be able to see the relationships between that world and ours and you may get a better understanding of how things work.

Disclaimer: I have to note that these are my opinions, what I took from the movie, but I advise you to watch it yourself, maybe you will feel differently or pick up on something I missed.

Jobs

I see this movie as the perfect metaphor for our world because in the film, people have to work for their time, which is also currency and if they run out of it, they are dead. You only have to watch with the right set of eyes because, in a real job, we are giving away our time (eight hours every day) for money, for a currency that we can later buy things with.

Time is now the currency. We earn it and spend it.

Even if people run out of money, in our society, they are not necessarily dead, like in the movie, because there are programs that can help people in need giving them food and maybe a place where they can temporarily stay. But in the long term, having no money may reflect a particular type of death, the death of your dreams and wishes.

Immortality

The whole movie is built around the principle of immortality, a fantasy that may seem like a blessing for some and a curse for others. In the film, you live for as much time as you have on your clock, and if someone can acquire great fortunes, they can live forever.

This is somehow similar to what’s happening in our world because the wealthy few have more money than they can ever spend, so they have financial immortality because they will never run out of money in their lifetime.

For a few to be immortal, many must die.

To put this into our world’s parameters, for a few to be rich, many must be poor. Everybody cannot be rich because then we would all have the same amount of money thus the definition of richness would not be valid anymore. There is enough money so everyone can have a decent life but that, as in the movie, is not possible because it would put the world out of order creating a new one, which doesn’t seem like such a bad thing after all but the rich will never let it happen.

The cost of living keeps rising to make sure people keep dying.

In a world where everyone has the possibility of being immortal, such a thing seems impossible because, in the movie, the poor are mistreated working for pennies while the cost of living keeps on rising so they can’t break their limitations.

Death

Even if the idea of living forever may sound appealing for some, it is never a good idea because we as humans are beings that probably have both a body and a soul, and at some point, we all have to meet “our creator”.

This thing is well stated in Sylvia’s quote “The clock is good for no one. The poor die and the rich don’t live. We can all live forever as long as we don’t do anything foolish”. She dropped a real gem here. Most people can live for a long time as long as they have a safe and decent life which is not bad if that’s your thing. But you see, tasting all life’s wonders comes with a price and most of the times it may just mean that you can’t have a life of security anymore and that you have to get out of your comfort zone.

Lessons Learned

By now, you were probably able to see the similarities between the world described in the movie and the world we live in, influential people abusing the weak so they can have an abundant life.

The most significant lesson I learned from this movie is that, as Will Salas was the hero of his world, spreading the wealth and helping the poor, you can be the hero of your inner world, helping yourself to get in a position from where you can help others.

No general structure can help everybody because every community has its needs, but if we all make a small step every day towards better times, maybe we have the chance to change our society too.

Make sure to mention in the comments what movie would you to see featured in this series because I am checking them.

Although it was critically panned, I enjoyed this movie when it came out. (since when did a critic actually know what they were talking about?)

Wow. I love this movie. Just like you said, the movie depicted immortality as long as you have so much time. I saw it like 3 times in the cinema :). Justin timberlake did justice to his role. It a great concept. The whole idea of the world revolving around time not only as money but as life too that right there shows awesome creation and imagination. It was a shame his mum died or rather ran out of time right in front of him. This really show that life is time. The more time you spend on relevant things, the more impact. The movie really is cool, time acts as money and life. The proverb 'Time is Gold' is not a proverb in that world. It is real. In a sense, the main two characters' behavior is absurd. However, the astonishment I felt at the main plot covered it. I could think of the importance of time.
My greatest lesson here is that time management is the key to success. It allows you to take control of your life rather than following the flow of others. As you accomplish more each day, make more sound decisions, and feel more in control, people notice just as Justin timberlake was noticed. Beautiful one @adsactly. I enjoyed reading and reminded me of that year i saw the movie. Great memories indeed.

You got it right: In this movie time becomes an aspect of measuring life; but not controlable.

true words

Time management has tremendous importance in anyone's daily life because we only have so much time on our hands every day and it would be a shame to waste it. Also, prioritization is essential too because it's always good to know what's one the first place and what's not.

Thank you, I am happy you liked my review. :D

Your welcome and thank you 37D4EC79-2CF6-4CD7-9ED0-65EC930876D3.jpeg

I've watched it at least 10 times. Now I will watch again. A metaphor beyond spectacular. I never respect someone who does not like this movie. Because he does not know how to think. In fact, he does not understand that we are right now. This is the first time I've had my fovors (the first 3 LOTRs). Nobody should blame this film for a while. Direct 2-3-4-5 ...... films must be drawn.
By the way, the casino scene is perfect.
Thanks for sharing

Ten times? Huh, that is quite a lot, how did you manage it? I think I watched like three or four times maybe; I enjoyed it every single time. The casino scene was impressive. Indeed, it was so close. Thanks. :)

Great movie!
And the explanation was pretty clear and very insightful!

Maybe you could feature this movie:

A Beautiful Mind

A 2001 American biographical drama film based on the life of John Nash, a Nobel Laureate in Economics. The film was directed by Ron Howard, from a screenplay written by Akiva Goldsman. It was inspired by a bestselling, Pulitzer Prize-nominated 1998 book of the same name by Sylvia Nasar. The film stars Russell Crowe, along with Ed Harris, Jennifer Connelly, Paul Bettany, Adam Goldberg, Judd Hirsch, Josh Lucas, Anthony Rapp, and Christopher Plummer in supporting roles. The story begins in Nash's days as a graduate student at Princeton University. Early in the film, Nash begins to develop paranoid schizophrenia and endures delusional episodes while painfully watching the loss and burden his condition brings on wife Alicia and friends.

The film opened in the United States cinemas on December 21, 2001. It went on to gross over $313 million worldwide and won four Academy Awards, for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Supporting Actress. It was also nominated for Best Actor, Best Film Editing, Best Makeup and Best Original Score.

It was well received by critics, but has been criticized for its inaccurate portrayal of some aspects of Nash's life, especially his other family and a son born out of wedlock. However, the filmmakers have stated that the film was not meant to be a literal representation.

That is a great suggestion, I watched this movie a long time ago and as far as I can remember I enjoyed it. I will consider it and maybe write about it sometime in the future. Thanks for your recommendation, it is well received. :)

I really admire this post, in our world only the rich people taste the good life while the poor suffers the consequences of the outcome of life. Take for instance if war should spark up right in a country or I mean the rich have the resources to get to somewhere safe meanwhile the poor have to face whatever outcome the war brings. They rich try to make sure the gap between them are really far keeping distance away from the poor, they rich have the nicest things, beautiful houses, spouses, cars and all of that and people tend to familiarize With them just to get their share of their wealth. The society is growing everyday and the wound is cutting deeper where the poor are being segregated and maltreated. We can stop this we can try our best. Thanks for sharing , for supporting good deeds to be done but sadly they will always be the rich and the poor.

This is really informative and meaningful.e All the reviews are really wonderful and captivating @adsactly movies. I really inspired to read this. This is a really big opportunity for us to get beautiful lessons from it. I really appreciate this movie. This is the best and fantastic movie that have so many things which we can learn for our life.
I really like this artical, your each and every word that you have written about this movie is really very true.
I really love this movie @adsactly.
You are doing a great job keep it up.
I really appreciate your thoughts and ideas. Good luck for all your efforts.
May you get success on every step of life.
Thank you so much for sharing this wonderful lessons about movie and entertaining us.
Stay blessed and Happy.

this film is not without its shortcomings, but its main idea is simply magnificent.
In our world and in our time everyone knows such a famous formula: "Time = money". This film is literally based on this idea. The main resource that each person is allocated to the earth is time. And that's how we manage the time, talking about our solvency. You can sit on the couch or mzuchat advanced technology - in the end you will spend the same amount of time, but you will achieve different results. So I see the regularity of using time as a resource.
In the film, time is the main calculation unit (similar to money in our world) and the one who is richer has an almost unlimited amount of time. The poor as always remain without everything. It's sad, but it's a fact that needs to be accepted. I like the basic concept of the film and the comparison with the money that we are shown.
My subjective opinion is that the main resources of any person are time, information, personal qualities (charisma) and money. But as we know that the difference from the film is that death can not be defeated for any money. And time in our real world is an irreplaceable resource. It is valuable in that it can not be restored. Therefore, it is priceless.
I believe that in the future, thanks to technological progress, humanity can turn time into sleep (it will be either robotic technology or genetic engineering). But now we can enjoy time and such good and meaningful films.
Thank you, I liked it :)

Nicely written:)

Time Out or In Time is first and foremost a crazy idea, original and rather well exploited in the whole film.

The origins of the replacement of money by time, its consequences on the population, the different social castes represented, and the worries engendered.
All in all, the actors are doing pretty well, without making big sparks, and even if it's not much, seeing Pettyfer in a role other than the nice hero of the story is a pleasure. The film does not escape banalities, love story and near-dead among others.
That said it is a good entertainment, perfect for a quiet evening.

I like a lot how the actors performed; it comes off very naturally for them even if I like more how people acted in Birdman. I wrote about that one on ADSactly too, a while ago.

Anyone should watch it at least once. :D

I've watched this movie several times for its complicated but rather astounding plot. Justin Timberlake and Amanda Seyfried are truly a pair worthy of being watched, they deliver passionate and intriguing interpretations of their characters and are able to take people into the situations that occur in the film. As for the social commentary of the film, I have to say that even though movies have been tapping into the social dilemma for quite some time, In Times does it in a truly reflexive way, making you look into not only the protagonists' background but that of the supporting characters as well. For instance, there's Johnny Galecki's drunk-to-the-bone Borel, who spends his 'time' in booze irresponsibly, who reminds you how weak the human mind can be, even in situations of crisis and so forth. All the characters leave us something to reflect upon and that's the true beauty of In Time.

Kudos for this article, my friend!

Those were exactly my thoughts; they play their parts very well. That it's a great point, most characters reflect real human types, and it's impressive because they are doing it so well.

Thank you for your comment. :)

I saw this movie a few years ago, and I remember ti being really interesting, because I saw it as a very nice critique of how our society works in capitalism. I can see a correlation regarding the theme about society with one other movie. Have you seen 'The Lobster' from the director Yorgos Lanthimos? I'd definitely like to see what do you think about it, because it has a very interesting parody of human relations.

Thank you. I heard about The Lobster before, but I haven't watched it so far. It does look quite interesting, I just bookmarked it, and I will probably give it a watch when I have time and maybe write a review about it. :D

I will try and look out for The Lobster. Thanks. Movies like thse should be seen over and over again. You get something you didn't get the last time you watched

I saw this movie in 2013 or so and it was so touching. Just like you said it's could be likened to our today world. I imagined if we ran on digital time like that. This movie helped me appreciate life and the breath no one can take from me. If it's money, we will hopefully make it for where there is life there is hope. Thanks for sharing @adsactly. Always sharing educative and informative stuffs

I watched it for the first time quite a while ago, and I thought it would be perfect for a review. I am thrilled you enjoyed this review, there are much more to come. :)

Pleas keep it coming @guyfawkes4-20. I love movies that put the mind to work. It's a movie I paused several time, laid back on my bed to think because I watched it on my laptop. I recall the girls father who had a lending company and I could relate that to our present day government. Good job

It started out really good but felt it kind of lost it's way half way through and the ending was very anticlimactic. . The second half of the film is very forgettable and bland for some reason.

Financially immortal is a good feeling and an amazing bucket list goal...

I think those words you wrote pulled me into this post and held my attention. My normal morning routine is to wake, have a nootropic, then meditate to this:

In this meditation, which is funny, there is a segment where you are focusing on giving good energy back to society, “feeing your soul’s connection to the planet via a white light..” This article I came across after my morning routine today. Thank you for the continued good thoughts my friend... Here is my gift back to you and all those for upvoting this comment:
60F20815-AB48-47A9-AD5D-4DE2B433DAB5.jpeg

My problem with this is I forget more than half of what I must retain and practice to become better as I get caught up in everyday life... Anybody has a lasting solution?

The film tells us that what we have is the most precious thing is time, capitalism is a lot of reference, it is late and it is always there. yes, but generally overall my expectations were met.@adsactly

In poker Scene
I don't get it, why isn't the one with the largest amount of years
raising to all in every time.. and the others will just fold because if they call they will die...

Exactly, our time is our most scarce and precious resource, but still, too many are wasting it. :)

it is a wonderful movie
The movie stars are Justin Timberlake, Amanda Seyfried, Cillian Murphy

It's a very interesting movie.Thanks for review @adsactly very–very good movie

Film ini sangat menarik bagi saya

The irony of life depending on a time clock! That movie is amazing. I sometimes use to ask my self, how would the world be if we truly buy and sell, pay for all services with time!

Its a very interesting movie. I fell in love with it when i first watched it. Good review from you!

Your post is very fascinating, please teach me to play steemit, because I just play steemit

Si tuviera tiempo de sobra ,,, viviria viendo peliculas son mi pasion, exelente.. interesante habla de la importancia del tiempo

A lot of my friends didn't enjoy this movie, but personally, I loved it. The concept of time as a currency is just too attractive for me since I'm a time travel nerd. The class divide on the amount of time you had was interesting too, society seems to always adapt top have people at the top and people at the bottom.

Great post.It seems like interesting movie from your post. I will watch it

ohh I loved that movie. One day the world will be change like this? I think it would not be like this but not so different. We have too much to learn for this movie.

Great review @adsactly!

Sadly I've watched only 'In Time' 😔 . And I've not regretted doing so.
I'll definitely look for the rest of the movies you've reviewed.

Wow, cool post! You must be a really big movie fan.... I love watching movies too.... I recently watched a file called: Molly's Game, it tells the true story of Molly Bloom.... was so interesting to see her story unfold....films based on real people's life stories are so good.... I was also a fan of the Steve Jobs films they made a few years back :)

Here's the official trailer linked from YouTube:

Think I am going to watch this movie again now. Thanks for the post :)

I have seen the movie.
It's amazing
How an ordinary man helps the needy people by stealing from very rich people
Thats just awesome

the best scene in this meaningful movie was the scene that justin timberlake came up with gun in the presents of many bodyguards of girls father.

i will never forget this movie, i have watched it manytimes.
I hope to make second one.

2018-01-31.jpg

That was a great review. I'd love to know your idea about Chaos theory and movies based on it like "butterfly effect " since challenges the possibilty of controling life.
Somehow the idea behind "in time"

who can help me?I must write essay about "IN TIME " film. first question is how regulated government in this movie?

The idea and story of In Time movie is amazing. Character development and acting is absolutely atrocious. It needed more back story and better actors.

Very very important knowledge
So this is very good post for who watch movies

Nice video man, u have my vote !;(

Among the rare films that make me happy are those who make me happy. a movie I watched several times. I definitely recommend it for friends who are not watching. there are certain rules and bounds that we have to live, and it is really relieving people to come up against them. The film is really well explained.

HEY, here are some funny posts and some wallpapers and cryptocurrency news, follow me ! Support each others !😼😼

Gotta see this movie...nice post

This was one of the best movies I’ve seen and the concept of time as currency was interesting. If you think about it, aren’t we using that currency already but aren’t taking it seriously enough? This type of exaggeration in the movie could be beneficial, maybe it will put things in the right perspective for us. I always recommend this movie to other in hope it would.

Nice coded movies...it's all heading to a greater plan and for the good the humanity.

Movies can inspire. They can make you think out of box. Sometimes they can make you question yourself and look back at your life or perhaps even see your future. There is a true and honest kid inside each of us. When we grow older, often we get so serious that we forget the wonder of life.
These inspiring movies have made me a better person, often helping me believe in myself and look for the bright side no matter what is happening in my life.

In addition, People always want something else, but not what they have. At one point they forget that is it what they have chosen a while ago and it is given to them to have the lesson of life and grow within. This movie gives an opportunity to look how it would be if it would turned out differently. To see the life from other’s point of you and realize you can be happy with all you have, it is just your choice.

amzing

I love in time... Very interesting

Nice Boss

It's one of the best movie in the world with an epic story !!

please follow my friends

yes Sir you are right and very close to mine thoughts.
We all have life given by god and also he gives wealth to some of us and to whom he didnt gave he survive for it and do hardworking for it. The main thing is time that how he should manage his day for working.. But forsome instant its also the reponsibility of the richpeople to help others to fullfill their basic needs.
We should join organization working for the needsof others and should donate some money to them.
I also saw people in my countries who do not have proper medicatation for their illness :(: ( :(

amazing post and nice video,,,i was enjoyed...thanks for shareing

I agree

In Time is really such a beautiful movie. I remember i was hooked for a long time even after seeing the movie. It just stayed with me and I couldn't shake it off.

It gives a literal meaning to the saying Time is Money in such a sublime way, because there they actually spent time for transactions and like in our world there was such a disparity.

I guess such is the reality of our world. Nice analysis, brother.

Great @adsactly
thanks for sharing.

Good review. I've never seen the movie though.

@adsactly In time is one of my greatest movie of all time... I kind of see the movie as an expository on how corporations tries to control the economy to their advantage, especially those with monopolistic product (pharmaceuticals especially)... Shows the depth of human greed... Quite insightful! Thanks for the post!

Its a very interesting movie. I fell in love with it when i first watched it. Good review from you!

when I first saw the movie it troubled me so much, but it is actually ironic, we sell our time every day

In time is a very interesting movie, I have been watching it over and over and I never feel bored to watch it again, and I like the players

It looks like james bonds, doesn’t it? But it has lot mysteries than action, right?

A dope movie... Nice..

Awsome

Regarding the movie death. I have not seen it though but if only the body does not decay it would be nice to live eternal.

Thanks for sharing....

I've watch this movie for a couple of times. It really does teaches great lesson. Imagine the only currency there is... is the time itself and one can achieve imortality. The thing is, its not how long you can live, its how you live your life.

great movie.
nice post

Although i av not watch this movie but i Know it will be interesting. Is it interesting?

its best movie..
I almost every night watching movies until late at night

I love the quote the poor die and the rich don't live.

Really Really. Time is a precious thing to come in possession of
