I know that is a very bold statement. The original Star Wars trilogy, Toy Story, The Dark Knight Trilogy, and others over the years, are the few to complete trilogies in a great fashion. Usually a trilogy will tail off in the sequels, and have a weak link, but with Planet of the Apes, as with the aforementioned above, this is not the case at all. The funny aspect about these movies is that they seem almost impossible to rank, as they are such strong movies, that they are all on the short list of my favorite movies of all time. The newest film, "War For the Planet of the Apes", is to some people the best movie in the trilogy, but to me might be my least favorite. Don't get me wrong, I loved the movie, but I loved the other ones. What is interesting to me is how under-the-radar these movies are. Probably because they have that summer blockbuster image, people aren't seeing them as the masterpieces they truly are.
I will not spoil this series for those who have not seen any of the films (you need to get on that quickly), but it deals with philosophical questions that humanity contemplates. In the first movie, the theme is that you shouldn't mess around with the natural order of things, and doing so could bring forth extraordinary consequences. The second movie deals with the themes of war and peace, revenge and forgiveness, and the clashing between the leaders of the apes who have separate philosophies. The new movie, despite it's name, is not really a war movie, but really focuses on themes like revenge and sacrifice.
The best aspect of this series for me is the character development. The main character is a monkey named Caesar, the son of an ape that was being scientifically tested on for a drug that could cure alzheimer disease, and was discovered early on to have advanced cognitive capabilities. Caesar was adopted by the creator of the drug, and the entire series is about his development from little baby chimp, to the wise philosopher warrior king of the apes. The movies make you truly care about the characters, particularly the first one for me. You see a lot of animal cruelty in Rise of the Planet of the Apes, and it leads you to root for the apes to win over the humans in battle.
Once again, this whole series is fantastic. In my opinion, the greatest trilogy of all time, with Nolan's Batman trilogy a close second. The second movie in this trilogy is one of the best movies I have ever seen. And if you love movies but haven't had the time to watch these yet, I suggest you call out from work, or quit your job to sit down and enjoy these.
