The streaming wars: Everyone is the losersteemCreated with Sketch.

There was a time not too long ago when satellite television was the king of entertainment! We paid our monthly subscriptions and had access to a variety of local and international entertainment, but we were at the mercy of the schedulers who select the programming.

on demand entertainment

If we wanted something on demand, we would need to buy or hire the DVD or Blu-Ray or download a pirate copy from the internet.

It was the entertainment of the times, and as the internet became more media-rich we were able to find our entertainment on demand and Netflix seemed to be the company that took the risk and pushed forward this idea, and we all got on board! Streaming went mainstream, and Netflix and chill was the order of the day

The company grew in leaps and bounds and started to make its programming and destroyed traditional on-demand entertainment like blockbuster and other video rental services

Going across streams

It wouldn’t be long before other companies came sniffing around and wanted a piece of the action! Hulu and Amazon prime started early on, Apple TV launched this year and Disney+ launched this week and in 2 days got 10 million sign-ups.

There is a need for scripted entertainment the masses want to be glued to their screens so why not profit from it

One stream to rule them all

Having a Netflix subscription used to be great as they had an extensive back catalogue of old movies and shows and it’s own original content too, but as the competition came in, they were slowly stripped of content.

While we’re told that competition is always good for the market as it brings better pricing and services in terms of streaming I don’t think that’s the case.

The more fragmented the streaming market becomes the less value a subscription holds! Why would a consumer pay for four different services to watch all the shows they like?

Some will decide on the best service for them and miss out or pirate the rest or switch on their subscription when needed others will move to piracy full time.

Consumers lose a quality service with better, faster streaming, and they lose customers.

streaming sites will need to suck it up

The way I see it is streaming sites will need to suck it up and work together! Either a single subscription that gives you access to all the showed across the platforms, or they need to have a pay per view service so you can watch the shows you want and only pay for that

Putting the block in a blockbuster

Instead of putting blocks on regions and blocking consumers from enjoying the content, I feel blockchain would be a fantastic solution for this.

Production houses could secure their shows or movies on their chain with a smart contract, and we as users could tap into the various side chains needed to get the shows we want from any interface we like!

It would also help weed out better content because it wouldn’t be pushed on us by specific front ends! We pick the shows based on merit on what we enjoy and not what is algorithmically forced into our faces!

I still have my Netflix subscription, but I doubt I’ll hold on to it for very much longer

It might look that way, but would Netflix have kept making great, original content if not for the spectre of competition?
What kind of great content will we see from each of these providers?

My issue isn't with original content my issue is these services are differentiating themselves based on the licencing agreements they can get with third party production houses. So one will have HBO's show one will have the hit fro another Network.

If it was to be a successful market all providers should not have exclusive rights to 3rd party content. There own original stuff maybe I could understand but they could also just licence it as they did in the past, just because Disney has a service doesn't mean Netflix shouldn't be able to licence Marvel movies

Shouldn't the end goal be for more users to see your content not only users who pay me can see my content?

I don’t understand the demand for all these steaming services. Then again I don’t really watch tv much. Maybe I’m one of the lucky ones? Steem monsters has me instead! lol

Pretty soon the lawsuits will start coming with the streaming companies fighting each other, Netflix will probably file the first one.

Lol I think it’s because the normies spend their down time vegging out in front of shows and sport which is why these guys duke it out like this! It’s a money printing machine in a way, people have proved they willing to watch just about any shit

It will be interesting to see how it all plays out, I think amazon will be the first one to pull out they’re already in too many things to care about it

Ya true, amazon has lots to do, they should stick to what they know.

I bet Facebook is going to try to get into the streaming lol they’re failing at the other stuff like the portal. It reminds me of when General Motors was trying to get into everything and went bankrupt from failing so often.

They will never work together, so thr battle is here to stay and the consumer will suffer... Or download content from piracy sites and skip all subscriptions...

Indeed, that's the problem when its profit at all costs its a race to the bottom. Instead of working together to grow the streaming market and raise all ships in the process, they will rather try to destroy one another and shrink the market until a few survive

Eventually, a program will come along that plays all streaming services in one convenient "box". People will buy this to combine all their different brainwashing subscriptions. Soon, the company gets greedy and starts adding in advertising over all streaming services but people had already gotten used to the convenient service so they let it slide. Pretty soon, people are paying hundreds of dollars a month for their shows and it mostly consists of ads. It will end up being the same as traditional cable with more tailored ads and not having to set your calendar for specific shows. Just look at how many ads YouTube shoves down your throat now if your not using Brave Browser. It wasn't always like that.

If people want to consume mindless content let it be their choice to abuse their bodies, it's just another vice no different from cigarettes, gambling or alcohol. I have no doubt advertising is coming, it always does with these kinds of business models. Make something cool, get people to use it, place ads in front of them

I agree the number of ads on YouTube is ridiculous, they really pushing people to want that premium subscription

For sure it's anyone's own choice to do/watch what they want. It's just hard to watch (see what I did there) when I can see it coming and the consumer doesn't realize.

Blockchain could be a great way for steaming to move to.

Lol but it's never going to happen, its all about the bottom line? Why build for the future, its about profits now
