It's always interesting to see how well sci-fi movies and TV shows predict the future. Especially when it comes to sci-fi movies with a dystopian theme. Scary, sure, but interesting.
When it comes to Demolition Man, certainly it got some of the little things right like tablets, internet phones, and videoconferencing...but mostly these were things that had been predicted long before and were already right around the corner. What's more impressive though is how it gets other things right too, like the increasing dominance of government in our lives. I guess it shouldn't really be that impressive. Dystopian movies rarely get things wrong or when they do it is only by a matter of degree. For example, check out how we've reacted to COVID compared to the ever present germaphobia portrayed in Demolition Man. Or how stricter gun control is bringing us closer to what was going on in that movie. There are also parallels in the hostility to free speech and the general restrictions on freedom portrayed. At least we still have sex.
Sadly, Demolition Man isn't alone in accurately predicting dystopian factors creeping into society. For a movie that really hits the nail on the head, check out Idiocracy. In any case, both movies are fun to watch as long as you don't think to much about them. If you do, they start to feel like horror movies.
