Gillespie’s grunt, a glacier thawing in sighs,

cracking like magnolia bark. No allies,
just men frayed by the grindstone of their fears.
Sparta’s rot blooms beneath the kudzu sun:
a mechanic’s tremor, a diner’s venomous leer.
The film’s lens dares to call a spade a spade—
yet lets the audience clutch the spear.
Quincy’s horns bleed midnight; Ray Charles hums
the ache of progress—slow, bruised, never done.
