In the realm of cinema's vibrant past,
A decade shone, where films dared to last,
The 1960s, a transformative time and space,
Where boundaries were pushed, and themes took their place.

Amidst this wave, a film did quietly stand,
The Pawnbroker, a drama, with a poignant hand,
Directed by Lumet, with a story to unfold,
Of Sol Nazerman, a man with a heart turned cold.

A Jewish immigrant, with scars that would not fade,
His family lost to the horrors of Nazi shade,
He built a wall around his heart, to numb the pain,
And found solace in his pawnshop, where desperation reigns.

With Rod Steiger's portrayal, nuanced and so fine,
Nazerman's character came alive, in all his complexity divine,
But despite its groundbreaking nature, the film did fade,
Into obscurity's shadows, where few would parade.

It tackled the Holocaust, with sensitivity and might,
A first for Hollywood films, in the dark of night,
And challenged censors' rules, with scenes so bold and bright,
Paving the way for future films to take flight.

Quincy Jones' score added depth to this cinematic tale,
"Soul Bossa Nova" still echoes today without fail.
Yet The Pawnbroker remains an enigma of its time,

A complex web of emotions intertwined like crime.
Its pessimism pervades every scene like winter’s chill breeze
It numbs even those who embody success.
