Poetic Television Review: Safe (Firefly, S1X05, 2002)

In the realm of Firefly's fleeting fame,
An episode stands weak, with Safe its name.
A plot that's generic, with chaos unfurled,
A firefight erupts, and Book is caught in the swirl.

Simon and River, separated from the rest,
Abducted by villagers in dire need of their best.
Simon must heal, while Mal seeks aid elsewhere,
Book's life hangs by a thread, in perilous fear.

Repetition rears its head, a tale retold,
Book's plight echoes Kaylee's, in a story grown old.
The Tams' plight, resolved with little finesse,
A deus ex machina, lacking dramatic essence.

Flashbacks offer insight, but yield little new,
The Tam family's tale, familiar to the crew.
A moment of grace, River's dance does unfold,
A glimpse of Summer Glau's talent, a treasure to behold.

Alas, Safe falls short, despite its charms,
A lackluster episode, in Firefly's varied arms.
Production values falter, direction uninspired,
A missed opportunity, in the series' brief, bright fired.
