I'm going to try to make this my last reference to Mulan. I know that I've been rather obsessive about this.
Here's the thing, I see bad movies all the time, not the least among them was Terminator: Dark Fate which I saw last night. Mulan wasn't just a bad movie. I think it's on the verge of being legitimately evil.
When Roger Ebert wrote his review of North, he wrote, "I hated this movie. Hated hated hated hated hated this movie. Hated it. Hated every simpering stupid vacant audience-insulting moment of it. Hated the sensibility that thought anyone would like it. Hated the implied insult to the audience by its belief that anyone would be entertained by it." That's how I feel about Mulan.
It took a good movie and stripped away everything good about it while adding a bunch of audience-insulting, stupid moments. It takes away every struggle and triumph the Mulan had and replaces it magical drivel which, in the name of a sort of Kathleen Kennedy form of feminism, just turns Mulan into a super human with godlike abilities and serves more as man-bashing than empowerment of women.
The movie only exists as a cash grab on the part of Disney that allows people to not think or be creative (so, it's everything that Disney has done in the last twenty years). Needless to say, I'm pissed that any money from any person that I know went into feeding this shit.
Of course, all of this is done on the backdrop of Chinese concentration camps, capitulation to the Chinese government, and open support for the atrocities in Hong Kong.
I hope that there are still people on the fence about seeing this steaming pile of shit who I can discourage from seeing it. I sat through it so you didn't have to. We need to vote with our dollars and we need to vote "no" on Disney until they fix what they're doing.
