New on Netflix: Imagine That (Eddie Murphy)

This film is by no means new as it was released in 2009. It only recently popped up on Netflix. Despite the fact that this movie lost a TON of money I found it to be a decent film and recommend watching it.

It was released during a time when Eddie Murphy films were more likely to get nominated for Golden Raspberries (awards you don't want) than they were to make money. Because of this propensity towards losses at the theater, studios were very stand-offish about hiring Murphy but Nickelodeon took a $55 million gamble and paid the price when the film failed to make even half of that back.

The story is that Evan Danielson (Murphy) is a very successful businessman in the financial world who has very little time for his daughter and now ex-wife because of his devotion to his job

This aspect of the movie is extremely unoriginal but whatever. His daughter, Olivia (played by the absolutely adorable Yara Shahidi) is eccentric and continually talks to her imaginary friends. Of course everyone just assumes that this is some kiddie-stuff that the adults mostly ignore because Olivia is just "going through a phase."

She communicates with her imaginary friends via this blanket

One day while she is with with her father at work, she is in imagination-land while her father is talking about companies he is analyzing as recommendations for clients to invest in. She tells her father that her imaginary friends don't like certain companies, but really like one of them. He ignores this information but it turns out that her assessment of the various companies, although spoken in baby-talk, was spot-on correct.

The rest of the film is spent with Evan attempting to channel his daughter's imaginary friends for more financial advice. The answers he receives from her playland friends is always correct.

I feel as though Eddie performs better in his serious roles because the world is kind of sick of his comedy after 20 years of him essentially playing the same characters. However, there are a few moments where he acts just like one of "The Klumps" and I feel this is something that Eddie struggles to break away from.

The dramatic acting is pretty nicely done though and there is an endearing story about family in there as well. I'll admit i got "misty-eyed" a few times.

Also, the addition of "Johnny Whitefeather," a pseudo-Native-American who is a rival financial adviser was pretty hilarious and also a bit edgy for a Nickelodeon film (there would probably be picket lines and boycotts over this role if it was done today.)

I've enjoyed Thomas Haden-Church since his time as "Lowel" on Wings

Maybe you have to be in the right mood but I enjoy a touching family movie from time to time. Had I simply looked at critic reviews of this before watching it I likely would have passed this one by. However, i had never even heard of it when it popped up on my Netflix menu and was actually a bit surprised to see that it was ripped to shreds by the professional reviewers.

Especially if you have young people in your family I think this one is a winner and I didn't look at my phone at all while it was on. It gets the thumbs up from me

My overall rating!

Eddie disappeared off the face of the earth didn't he! I wonder what he is doing now.

He just recently made a comeback to acting. Did a biopic comedy called My Name is Dolemite centered around Rudy Ray Moore and his career. Hopefully he'll stick with doing good shit and stay away from doing the crusty cum stained films he did in the 2000's.

Yeah, he did some bad ones. I didn't know he came back to it recently. I'll have to look out for it...Seems you haven't shit-canned it so might be nipple-tweakingly good?

I've yet to see it, but I've heard good things from most people. It also had solid writers who've done similar types of films that were received well, so I'm sure it claps cheeks. Hopefully I can check it out in the next few weeks though.

I await your review with thumb and forefingers poised to tweak...

i loved that movie. He was able to keep "The Nutty Professor" at bay for a full 90 minutes - which is what a lot of my criticism of him comes from.

Seems like most people enjoyed it, and I know the people who were involved with writing it have done good comedy biopic's before so I'm sure it isn't stinky ass, at the very least. I still need to get a copy and give it a watch, hopefully within the next few weeks I'll be able to.

Also, just to sound like a soulless shill, I have a new movie review up if you feel like getting a wet spot in your pants, baby.

shill on buddy. i probably would have ran into it anyway :)

For some reason Netflix cannot find my internet connection. 🤔

I am not really a fan of Eddie Murphy, good to hear I am not the only one sick from his so not funny roles. The child looks a bit big for baby talk.

perhaps i used the wrong word there. She uses childish words to refer to a very adult topic (Finance)

@gooddream Thanks I think I know shat you mean to say. Happy day. 💕

This is a very kind and instructive movie, you can review it many times, as it clearly demonstrates that everyone should look at his life from the outside and set the right priorities, that no money can buy the attention and love of a child, if at one time you were most passionate about your career.

I kind of gave up on Eddie Murphy when he moved into redoing the Disney classics and all of the Klump movies. I always saw him as more on an adult actor with adult humor so it never really connected with me when he tried to be the Nutty Professor or Dr. Dolittle. I was always more of a Beverly Hills Cop type person or more importantly a Golden Child type guy. I love that movie! I was a big fan of Wings when it was on as well. Such a great show with so many amazing characters.

i found out that they are going to do Coming to America 2, presumably because Arsenio Hall needs a paycheck and James Earl Jones might not be with us much longer.
