Movies | Avengers: Endgame. Review and Discussion Part 1

in movies •  5 years ago

Almost two months after the premiere of Avengers: Endgame there is still much to discuss, such as the possible end for some characters' arcs, our theories about what will happen next, questions we had left, but before all that just let me start with a late recount and discussion of the film itself...

Currently in Venezuela there are many problems with the electric service, constantly there are blackouts and most of the time you can't predict when it will happen. So being in a theater watching Avengers: Endgame without knowing if the power supply will fail in the middle of the movie is pure adrenaline!! To be honest I didn't think about that during the projection, I was too naive. Right after the great battle everything went dark, and since the cinema in question didn't have a backup power plant, I had to walk to my house without seeing the last scenes (like Bill Bixby walking at the end of an Incredible Hulk episode, music included).

At the beginning of the projection there was a problem with my ticket, as it seems that the system mistakenly sold some seats twice and someone came claiming the seat I was occupying, so not only did I lose a few minutes of the plot but when trying to demonstrate my right to be there I gave my ticket to the employee and then she disappeared without returning it. It wasn't a big deal because I was already there watching the film, except that the ticket was the only thing that would allow me to take the opportunity they gave us to return another day to watch the movie again due to the aforementioned electrical incident.

Finally, a few days later I was able to return to the theater (I paid my ticket again) and enjoy entirely this long awaited film. To be honest I didn't mind buying another ticket because I was planning to watch it at least twice anyways (I watched Infinity War three times). But time has passed and probably any review or discussion of the film at this point could be useless and inconsequential because all the hype and the excitement of the first weeks after the premiere is over. However, I constantly see reviews of old movies on this platform, so I said to myself ... Why not? Here is my recount and review of the events that occurred in Avengers: Endgame, and of course, it is full of spoilers so you are warned.

The story begins with a harrowing scene in which Clint Barton (Hawkeye), whom we did not see in Infinity War, loses his entire family. The fair and random selection with which Thanos intended to erase half of the population did not favor this character at all because only he survived in a family of five, an event that took him down a dark road in the following years. Yes, in this film we observed a 5-year leap in the plot, but not before resolving some pending issues, such as the fate of Tony Stark, who was left alone with Nebula on the planet Titan after being defeated by Thanos and witnessing the vanishing from Spider-man, Dr Strange and some of the Guardians of the Galaxy.

Stark and Nebula took the Guardians' ship but it had received a lot of damage during the battle so they ended stranded in space, without food and with the ship's life support system in critical condition. Fortunately they were rescued by Carol Danvers, aka Captain Marvel (review pending) and taken by her to earth. Back on Earth he meets Pepper and what remains of the Avengers at their compound. Particularly I was looking forward to see the reunion of Iron Man with Captain America (Steve Rogers), after their confrontation in Civil War, and although it was not as I expected, which is fine, it was convincing and true to the personality of this characters.

Steve, who never held any grudge, rushed to receive and help a weakened and starving Tony, while Tony saw him with a strange expression, still confused by the weakness and the convalescent state of his body and mind. Out of danger Tony delivers some words of resentment that he held against Captain for having protected Bucky and refusing to sign the Sokovia Accords, events that divided the team years ago. Also in the complex were Natasha (Black Widow), Bruce Banner, Thor, War Machine and Rocket, the only survivor of the Guardians of the Galaxy.

After detecting an energetic signature in the cosmos similar to the one occurred during the snap and now with the presence and help of Carol Danvers, who possessed an extraordinary power, they traveled to the planet where Thanos had retired to rest peacefully after completing his great mission of "salvation". The plan was to take the gauntlet and stones from their enemy and use them to return all those who had been killed. However, this wasn't possible because Thanos had used the gauntlet again to destroy the stones themselves, because they had already fulfilled their purpose and they were only a temptation according to him. Thanos was wounded and very weak after using the gauntlet for the second time, so he was easily subdued.

After hearing the terrible news of the destruction of the stones and losing all hope, Thor cuts off Thanos' head, a clear reference of that iconic phrase he said to Odin's son before the snap: "You should have aimed at the head". This time Thor didn't hesitate and decapitated him immediately, moved by his own rage and frustration at not being able to stop him the previous time. After failing to fix things, they return home and begin to deal with the consequences of everything that happened. That's where the 5-year jump mentioned above comes in.

Our beloved characters are doing the best they can to overcome the death of half the population of the universe and they blame themselves for haven’t prevent it. What comes next is an interesting representation of how human beings deal with traumatic events in their lives, which is something little explored in this genre. But I will continue with this topic in the next post, I invite you to continue reading and express your opinions below in the comments.
