Okay, so I wanted to start with confession - I am a huge geek of the 'Star Wars'. I absolutely adore the series, especially the 5th and 3rd part. I feel I have to share my thoughts on newest series.
Not long ago, I made peace with LucasArts being sold to Disney. I also made peace with the newest trilogy's don't care about the cannon of the Universe of Star Wars. It's not like it has to be worst because of it. But still the newest trilogy is pissing on achievements of hundreds of men and women, who created bunch of books, comics, games and short films.
What really bothers me is the silliness. I like 'The Last Jedi' more than 'The Force Awakens', but I feel the series is getting worst. The original 'Star Wars' weren't films about deep psychological and moral issues. The pathos was balance with quite good show and most of all - really cool vision of worlds/universe. With the newest films creators use this entire strategy to bring something new. It's awkay. But they are doing it wrong.
Clearly, any of subplots is not deep enough. They are not being continued and are not consequent. In the original 'Star Wars', besides rapid action, we've seen the structure of the Empire, politics of the Republic or scheming of the Separatists. Instead, we're receiving extremely divided, black and white world. The evil First Order is quite pathetic with its constantly-yelling leaders. On the other hand, the Rebels (why they are still rebels?!) represent infantile values of goodness and friendship. Not funny gags...
...or cute animals smells just like Disney's agenda.
Oh my, what an evil guy he is. Some kind of nazi or something.
I remember when the new trilogy (Episodes I-III) was on the screens. Old fans said: it's not good enough, childish, why Lucas made so many bad choices (Jar-Jar for instant xD). Nevertheless, it seems to me that the complexity of the diegetic world compensated for the scenario's weak spots. The threads that appeared had their logical continuations, they weren't cut-off while seems useless.
[Brace yourselves. Spoilers!]
In 'The Last Jedi' every previously moved subplot had not only continuation, but justification. The living meme, admiral Ackbar appears as a third-plan character for few seconds and dies. We're going to know about his death from someone's else small talk. Yeah, it's cruel. And what happened to Leia? Why does anyone noticed her powers? Is it really such a normal thing, to be floating in space? In the vacuum, the void, where is NOT oxygen? About Snoke's appearance I don't want to even mention...
The strategy seems to be clear. To attract the audience we need big names - the old cast. That's how Han, Luke, Leia, R2-D2, C-3PO or Chewbacca have their moments. Moments to be killed and made room for the new characters. It's not a bad move after all (except Yoda's presence) but we're not getting to know the new ones. We don't have chance to like or dislike them, they are bland.
I don't want to sound like some kind of psycho fan but the newest trilogy is a crap. Disney took their own way, the easy way - to sell gadgets, posters or clothes but not the film. For the record, I really do like 'The Rouge One'. Despite the cliché parts it has something new within. I think, creating the spin-offs is much better way and opportunity to expand the 'Star Wars' universe. I am looking forward to see the newest 'Solo Story', especially that handsome Donald Gloveris going to play Lando!
Stay tuned and may the force be with us all in those dark times.
