Retrospective: Favorite Thriller Films of 2017

1. Good Time

Hands down the best movie of 2017. The Safdie brothers have pulled a masterpiece here and the soundtrack (made by Oneohtrix Point Never) is definitely one to match. I wouldn't be surprised, though, if this movie doesn't receive the recognition it deserves at the following Oscars.

2. Brawl in Cell Block 99

After starring in season 2 of the great anthology series, True Detective, Vince Vaughn puts out another great performance in this crunchy thriller by  S. Craig Zahler. This is the 2nd feature film I see from Zahler (also recommend Bone Tomahawk) and I can already say I love his style and hope he goes on making more movies like these.

3. Get Out

What starts off as another movie that has the potential to exploit and blame white people's racism in the USA (as the industry seems to do a lot these days) develops into a much deeper story with at least a couple of twists that make it one of the best movies of the past year.  Daniel Kaluuya, who also played Bing in one of the best Black Mirror episodes to date (Fifteen Million Merits), is very fit for the lead role in here.

4. Wind River

A well-made film, although not spectacular. However, I do feel this one might get more appreciation at the Oscars than the others. The scenery with all the snow in it makes it great for being watched in the winter, so don't miss it.

5. I Don't Feel at Home in This World Anymore

Melanie Lynskey does a great job of portraying a depressed unattractive woman in this one, but I gotta say it's Elijah Wood's role that cracked me up. Seeing him as an obnoxious martial arts enthusiast makes for a great comedy, but don't be fooled, this movie is as much a thriller as it is amusing.

Other mentions would be "The Killing of a Sacred Deer", "mother!" and "It Comes at Night", but I haven't watched those yet. In case you have, please do tell me which one is a must see.

Nice movies!

I’ve seen It Comes At Night which I thought was really well done as a slow psychological thriller - but I think they have oversold it as a horror movie which it really isn’t. I liked Wind River a lot, it’s a hard one to shake off...

I will have to check out that, then! Thanks.

Watched both I Don't Feel at Home in This World Anymore and then right after Good Time.

Both great recommendations!
