Just finished watching The Mummy with Tom Cruise aminute ago. I waited for the movie to be available on demand because the reviews were so mixed, yet I tried to keep an open mind and just enjoy the flick.
It was ok and I had fun!
It had this Marvel / First Person Shooter feeling to it. Marvel because it's so packed with humor although protagonists were often on the edge to death and game feeling because almost throughout the whole movie Tom Cruise seemed like a passenger to a script simply witnessing the action without having an opinion of his own. Not saying that is a bad thing but thats how it feels to me.
The end is actually pretty cool and makes me wanna see more because the possibilities for many adventures to come are given through one change in Tom. His change from being a passenger on a ride to destiny to a multiple layered character who can create his own story.
Side note:
This movie reminds me of the Fantastic Four reboot which also got bad reviews. I think it's risky to create such films because they are entries to follow ups which are planned already before the first movies coming to theatres. Movies made this way have one problem. Although there is a plot with beginning, climax, end, it often feels unpleasently pasted and I believe audience must feel somewhat cheated because there is this subtle impression that those projects were not receiving the amount of passion the audience would have wished for the film to get in order to cause orgasms on a visual and mental level.
Anyway, maybe hollywood politics caused this snowball of hate towards The Mummy and although there is room for improvements I'd totally watch a sequel
