This comedy looked like it had potential mostly because it stars Jonah Hill, and Justin Long before he started to pursue serious roles that didn't work out for him and pretty much disappeared from the entertainment scene. It's fine with me that he is gone because I never really much cared for him.
This college losers who discover huge success has been done before, just not exactly in the same way that is done here. There isn't much to spoil about this film since every move that is made is predictable and appears in almost every movie of this type. The scenarios that the ever expanding group finds themselves in gets increasingly absurd as time goes by and if you bother to ask certain questions about what is going on, you will just hurt yourself.
Just look at the name of the school: South Harmon Institute of Technology or S.H.I.T.: Therein lies the type of humor that you can expect during the entire film.
Basically a bunch of kids that can't get into colleges that they want to be in for this reason or that decide to create their own fake university complete with a campus building, classrooms, and even dorms. This is ludicrous right from the start because something of this magnitude would be extremely expensive to pull off. The only reason why they even bother is so that just a few of the parents would believe that their kids are actually going to college but then the early mishap turns this into a much bigger problem.
The fake school's fake website is programmed to accept anyone that applies to the college and the next thing you know there are hundreds of students waiting at the entrance that are looking for their classes and dorms. The original masterminds of the plan were just going to turn everyone away but then the kids start handing them checks for tens of thousands of dollars. They decide to keep the scam going and have a go at making an actual university.
The movie isn't without its upsides such as the abusive Dean Ben Lewis who is played by Lewis Black and while he does have an educational background (in the film) he is actually just the washed up uncle of one of the characters.
The movie is pretty stupid but it has its moments but it lost me when the reason why the university faces closure is because they pissed off a Chad-filled fraternity at a nearby real college by having better parties than the frat does. The fraternity then sees it as their duty to make sure the entire college is shut down. This is very reminiscent of PCU, which in my opinion is actually a great film, unlike this one.
Personally, I actually kind of agree with the anti-traditional-university message that this film contains but at the end of the day that movie is just really impractical, predictable, and sadly, not very funny. If you watched the above clip and saw the Jonah Hill scream... you've already seen one of the top 3 funny moments in the entire thing.
Should I watch it?
Mostly, I would say no, you shouldn't unless you are really really bored.
It should come as no surprise that the people who made American Pie also made this movie - and i guess they were trying to cash in a bit more on that comedic notion and failed. The movie was a box office failure and was lambasted by professional critics. It isn't worth your time.
