This is one that a lot of folks may have missed. You are not prepared for the immediacy of this movie's violence. It is oppressive and just won't let you get situated.
The dialogue is just marvelous and all the acting is spot on. Everyone kills it... some literally! Kurt Russell is his perfect self. Imagine if Snake Plissken was a frontier family man instead of the consummate rebel. Patrick Wilson is the determined hero even while everything and everyone is working against his resolve. Matthew Fox, gentlmen, brutal killer, calculating and maybe a bit deranged. The supporting cast is also at turns hilarious and melancholic.
It is a remarkable watch. The build up, the characters, the climax, are all top shelf. After the movie was over I felt as if good versus evil isn't enough of a description. It's Good Enough vs. The Abyss. You owe it to yourself to watch this movie if you like westerns, horror, period drama, French new wave freak outs, or thought The Descent was okay but could have been better. Happy trails!
