Rom-com, a.k.a chick flicks, are usually overly cheesy, with highly predictable scenarios made to stir up tears. This is definitely not the case here. And even if you're a guy, you might actually enjoy the movie.
Annie seems to be the unluckiest woman in the world. Her casual sex seems to bring her down, he bakery went belly up, she rides a car almost as old as she is... and she seems pessimistic about relationships. Her childhood friend asks her to be the bridesmaid, which she accepts. But then Helen, hired for organisation, feels like a threat...
This movie would definitely not win any Oscars. Nevertheless, it's worth a look even if you're (insert woke term du jour for man). It doesn't romanticize love so much, the vulgarity isn't too gratuitous, and it shows that (insert woke term du jour for women) are just as raw in their feelings as men.
My own wedding was rather simple, but I know how stressful it can be. Seeing Anne trying to "outdone" Annie certainly rings a bell - especially since I did it from afar. Another relatable moment - for parents - would be about the mother of 3 boys, who misses the sex with her husband and is in over her head with their attitude.
In short, this movie is certainly worth the look. Finally, a chick flick that doesn't try to be the nth version of Cinderella. It does have predictable moments, but it's not overwhelming.
Final score: 3.5/5
Melissa McCarthy is just amazing in this movie. This might be what launched her career. I agree that this is not your typical chick flick and is a lot of fun.

The food poisoning scene was a little overdone, though
