Old: Typical Bad M. Night ShyamalansteemCreated with Sketch.

Since the Sixth Sense, it seems that M. Night Shyamalan's movies have been hit or miss - mostly misses, as with the Happening. While not with as ridiculous a premise, Old is definitely closer to the latter rather than Sixth Sense

A couple on the verge of divorcing takes one last family trip to Mexico to a very fancy resort. Along with a few other couples, they are brought to a very secluded beach from which they seemingly can't escape. And from which everyone seems to age very quickly...

That premise in itself could have lead to an interesting movie. The mystery around the beach, the rapid aging and the tension made a good first half/two-thirds of the movie. The aging was done well - at one point, when shifting from Gael Garcia's POV, everything becomes blurry. The children's aging is also done well, with their features still looking similar to their younger selves. And the tension among the visitors to understand why everything is happening was well managed

But when the big reveal comes, it's rapidly going downhill. Sure, the past few years gave me no sympathy, but it was pure, stereotypical Hollywood blasting (what they believe to be) capitalism - i.e. a complete lack of ethics.

And mental illnesses are treated in a very condescending manner. Yes, they are hard to deal with. But the doctor is treated like a maniac who's just a one-dimensional delusional person rather than one with a very serious issue that needs attention.

In short, Old is more of the same from Hollywood. Despite a strong start, it quickly sinks into woke bullshit against capitalism when it's actually corporatism. Avoid that one

Final rating: 2/5. My husband shared his boredom too

I feel the same way about "M Night Shamalamayayoo." All of his films follow the same "gotcha" paradigm and it isn't really interesting anymore. I remember being really excited about "The Village" but the twist was pretty well telegraphed in that one. I saw it coming from a long way away. These days I don't even get excited when I see that a new film has been released by him. I rarely even watch them. Thanks to you, I don't have to watch this one :)
