Shazam! Fury of the Gods: inferior to the first onesteemCreated with Sketch.

in movies •  last year

The first Shazam movie was a refreshing addition to the superhero genre since it didn't take itself seriously. While it still shows up in this movie, Fury of the Gods doesn't quite capture that magic.

Four years after the first movie, the daughters of Atlas go down to Earth to get the Staff of the Gods back (it was broken in the first movie) and restore their realm. They will eventually reach Philadelphia, which they trap under a magical dome. The "Philadelphia Failures" (the Shazam heroes) can't do much, and they are quite powerless against them...

While not the failure it should have been at the box-office, Fury of the Gods is not that interesting. The gags about the superheroes really being children fall flat (like one of them rescuing are fawning over kittens) and, during the climax of the movie, are coming out of nowhere. The goddesses are rather generic vilains, although Hesperia and Anne(thea) are a little more reasonable in the end.

Finally, the special effects were OK and I thought it was fun to see "real" unicorns. Although how they are dealt with falls flat like the heroes-are-children gags.

In short, Fury of the Gods lost its touch. Had it not existed, it would have saved one of the few superhero movies that didn't try to take itself seriously. And, of course, the obsession to integrate all movies into franchises - although it does makes sense, since it talks about Greek mythology - makes producers create all sorts of ludicrous links.
