Sonic 2: a disappointing sequelsteemCreated with Sketch.

The first Sonic movie was quite interesting for a movie adaptation. Some say that the first version of the hedgehog was a marketing ploy to attract attention, therefore prompting people to watch it become more "normal". And with the movie's finale, I had hopes the level would keep up. It didn't quite, sadly.

Still stuck on the Mushroom Planet, Robotnik tries to survive as well as he can, trying to infuse the native plant with very mitigated success. He is rescued by Knuckles, who wants revenge on Sonic. Speaking of, he tries to play his vigilante using his super speed. He meets Tails, who found him with one of his numerous gadgets, to tell him about the Master Emerald, which holds untold powers.

Like its predecessor, Sonic 2 has tons of subtil references to the games (and I'm sure I missed a few): the Ice Cap (on a snowboard), the Labyrinth Zone, the Mean Bean, Robotnik's "final boss" form, Tail's plane... But sadly, what made the previous movie's success has been exaggerated.

For starters, Jim Carey is much too over-the-top, becoming a caricature. It's like his infusions from Mushroom Planet made him worse. Knuckles and Tails, while well-integrated to the story, feel like their characters weren't complete. We do hear a backstory, but they feel like flies on the wall rather than full-fledged characters.

Finally, it feels like Sonic is dropping movie references completely at random. Like there was a quota to fill.

In short, Sonic 2 is worth a watch but will not become a cult movie. Robotnik has become too much, the humor feels forced and Knuckles looks much too dumb (and why is his voice so deep?) And if the sequel gets made (hint in the poster), I wonder if I will even watch since it's part of the later lore.

Final score: 3.1/5

I never even felt compelled to watch this. I also never saw the first one. Was it good?

Probably the best game adaptation around. The references were more subtil, and Carey was a little more controlled.
