Fairy tales are easy to discern: Medieval era, a damsel in distress kept by an evil force and rescued by Prince Charming in order to live happily ever after. Disney is known for their retelling of such tales, but takes a different turn for Tangled

This is a story of Rapunzel, the princess locked in a tall tower with hair equally as long. Every day during her birthday, she sees mysterious lanterns float in the sky, locked away. But one day, she is found out by... a petty thief. They make a bargain so she will give him back his stolen possession (a tiara): she wants to see the lanterns from closer.

The movie was OK, but not much more. Mother Gretel (the wicked stepmother) is a master manipulator, but her presence isn't as scary as THE stepmother, Lady Tremaine. No one can beat her menacing presence that would make anyone tremble.

Rapunzel, on her side, only has a slightly more elaborate backstory than the classical princess. She mostly dreams about freedom than Prince Charming . She is quite capable of defending herself with her deadly frying pan, and her kindness can turn the most brutal ruffian into a nostalgic softy.

Finally, "Eugene" does some subtle fourth-wall breaking that will make adults laugh. His "cascades" are even most unrealistic than Marvel's, but at least he's not the classical savior. Oh, he does save Rapunzel, but in an unusual manner...

In short, Tangled is an OK Disney movie. The damsel in distress is capable of defending herself, the evil stepmother is quite Machiavellian and even the noble steed is in for the comical relief.

Final rating: 3/5 (I didn't get into the song, except maybe Mother Knowns Best)
