This was a great movie. I think Marvel likes to tease us with false marketing, because this movie is not what it was marketed as. This is a fun, lighted hearted and emotional Marvel movie, by the Marvel formula. It is a basic origin movie. There are no surprises there, except for the way it is presented.
My positive impression was reinforced by the screening that I was in. It was the first screening of the movie that wasn't 3D (it just gives me really bad headaches) and filled with mostly hardcore Marvel fans. I had the same experience I that I got when I saw Avengers: Infinity War. People clapped, and cheered and laughed and owwed and ahhhed and it was such a great experience. Marvel is a journey that we take with our beloved characters and in a sense, with each other.
The movie takes place in the 90s and is full of 90s nostalgia. 90s kids will understand how frustrating technology was at the time. The clothes, the soundtrack and the vibes the movie gives are all full of 90 nostalgia.
The movie focuses on Carol Danvers as a member of the Kree Starforce, who must rediscover her past as she doesn't remember it. I must say there were more twists and turns in this story than I expected. There is a reason why we didn't know who all of the characters are. Wow. Just wow. I have a feeling that this movie won't do as well outside of the US as in the US, as it's more of a plot movie than an action movie.
I can't say that Brie Larson's performance was amazing. But it was endearing, likable, even if not relatable. She felt unique and regular at the same time. She's not a Mary Sue, Mary Sue's don't do that much damage and that many mistakes. She's just a person caught in a middle of a war and trying to do the best she can. Also she has her Binary powers which is so freaking cool and looks so cool on the big screen.
Samuel L Jackson returns as Nick Fury. He has more screen time in this movie than in any other previous Marvel movie. He is almost a co-lead in the movie. I think this is my favorite performance of Jackson in the MCU, maybe because we get more of him, and maybe it's because of his previous personality.
Ben Mendelsohn is a professional villain. But he was excellent as Talos, the lead Skrull of the movie. The Skrulls were very well utilized in this movie.
Lashana Lynch shines as Maria Rambeau. Her performance gave me the chills. She really sold her friendship with Carol Danvers and her own abilities as a pilot.
I can't say who Annette Bening is playing, but this is not the case of a famous actor taking in a silly role for a paycheck (like Glenn Close). She has a true role in the movie and she is brilliant in it, while also being playful.
The cat steals the show. Really. He is not just adorable, but he is adorable.
Jude Law didn't impress me, even though his role was impressive. He just felt flat to me.
The rest of the cast barley have anything to do in the movie. Sorry, if you're a Gemma Chan fan you can skip this movie.
You have to stay for the mid-credit scene, but not the post one. If you are in a real hurry, skip the last one.
Also, one of Marvel's biggest accomplishments is that Danvers doesn't end up fighting a person with her exact same powers. After Iron Man, Ant Man and Black Panther I had enough of that sort of villain. Still, the movie has some Marvel flaws like problems with consistency and logic, but I had no problem with my suspension of disbelief.
Again, Marvel did a great job with being loyal to the source material and making it work with a few changes within the MCU. I can see how easily Captain Marvel will fit in with the rest of the Avengers. Marvel delivered another great movie that makes origin movies feel fresh. Sure, this is not groundbreaking story telling, but it delivers what it promised.
Maybe I'll do a spoiler review as there is so much to discuss about the movie.
I give this movie a 8.5/10

Nope. I live outside of the US, movies open a day or two earlier here. I bought a ticket for the first screening possible the moment tickets went online.
Enjoy the movie and let me know what you thought about it.

I am a HUGE fan of anything and everything Marvel! Thank you, @readingdanvers for posting a review for Captain Marvel. I am so crushed that I haven't seen it yet. Unfortunately, I have been sick and will be recovering soon. Hopefully my hubby (also BIG Marvel fan) will be able to see it this weekend. I have Upvoted and Resteemed your awesome review. I would love to read a review that further discusses Annette Bening's character and other pivotal plot points in the movie. I will be sure to wait till I see the movie before I read it, lol, but still will keep a look out for the detailed - spoiler review :)

I wouldn't call myself a "Gemma Chan fan" but I do like her. And I agree with you. She was pretty much invisible in this film.

I loved this movie more than I thought I would. I actually kind of wish it was a little longer or they were allowed to stop and let the characters breathe a little more... but, honestly, it is a action movie and kicked ass. Both Rambeau's were awesome. I could comment on the other characters and not enough time spent on them as well, but this was totally Captain Marvel's movie with a touch of Fury and Goose, and I would take a whole other movie of just these three. Despite I want more of this movie, most likely the deleted scenes will be like more 90s references or something like that.
Edit: Also, Stan Lee cameo is best cameo.
