Could Gambit Movie Finally Be Out of Development Hell?

We’ve been hearing about a Gambit movie since 2014, when it was revealed that Channing Tatum will be playing the lead role. All seemed to be going well. In 2015 we even got an amazing selfie of all of the actors in the X-MEN verse during comic con. The movie got a October 7, 2016 release date, and it all went downhill from there.

The movie changed so many directors it’s hard to keep up. First Rupert Wyatt left because he wanted to rewrite the script, although officially it’s was stated that he left because of scheduling conflicts. Then Doug Liman left to direct Justice League Dark.

Now the movie has Gore Verbinksi ( Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl ) as a director and a shiny new release date: February 14, 2019. Yes, Valentine’s day. Just like Deadpool, Gambit will try to get the most out of this holiday, which has been proven to be a box office success for many movies, mutants including.

This movie will also be another comic book movie which will be genre bended as it will be a heist movie. Or that’s what it was the last time they talked about the script. With a new director, it will probably be rewritten again.

A big problem that Fox did not predict is that Channing Tatum is no longer a popular actor as he once was. Kingsman: The Golden Circle, Logan Lucky and Jupiter Ascending are all box office flops. His last box office success that is associated only with him is 22 Jump Street . I doubt that Van Helsing will improve his reputation. Perhaps I’m wrong, and he will surprise us like Ryan Reynolds did. But, perhaps Fox should consider recasting.

Not all comic book movies have a smooth run from conception to the big screen, and Gambit has been stuck in development hell for about 3 years now and I am not sure if we will get to see it on the big screen despite the new release date. Although it did take about 9 years to make Ant-Man so maybe there is hope for Gambit as well.

I have always had the biggest crush on Gambit but I’m not a fan of Channing Tatum. There was a lot of hype around him after his Step-up movie and that stripper movie. I hope they recast.

There is not a lot of hype around him now. I hope they will recast him as well, but I don’t think Fox will take such a big risk at this point.
