Yes, I'm big Depeche Mode fan. The fly around the world to see their concerts sort of a fan. I have been waiting for a DVD of their latest tour, Global Spirit Tour, for over a year. Now the wait is over. Sort of. Anton Corbijn directed this concert movie, as he has been directing the videos, movies and doing the art stage design for Depeche Mode for over a decade.
This movie isn't exactly what you expect. It is not an hour and half of pure concert. It is more similar to the 101 concert show. It follows six fans from all around the world and tells their Depeche Mode story. How the band and their music had an impact on their personal lives. Depeche Mode hardcore fans know that it is more than just listening to the songs. These songs have an impact, and as the band has been around for so long, that you develop and grow with them.
Their personal stories are intertwine with the concert that took place in Berlin, the city that has become the capital of Depeche Mode fans. From what I understand concerts in Berlin have a special vibe, special feeling about them. Even though I haven't been in a concert in Berlin, it has become a known fact amongst fans and I've known more than a few fans that confirmed this fact. So a Berlin concert film was a must, when it comes to telling the stories of the fans.
This movie felt almost like a thank you to the fans. As there are unconfirmed rumors that this was the last Depeche Mode tour ever, it could possibly a thank you and goodbye note. If you are not a fan, you probably won't enjoy this, so you might as well skip it. If you are a Depeche Mode fan then it is a special experience to watch it.
If you can't watch the movie as it is screened in very few cinemas around the world for just a few days, the movie will soon air on Netflix.
But hopefully we'll see them next time.
