I am a huge Tolkien fun so I am super excited. His life is as interesting as his fictional work so this movie has a lot to work with. Nicholas Hoult will play the young J.R.R. Tolkien and Lily Collins will play Edith Bratt. Not actors that will bring in the box office money. The movie will focus on Tolkien's younger years, his relationship with his wife, his time as a solider during World War I and his writing.
The movie will show his four years of service in the army and the hardships and horror that he experienced there. During that time he was also in love with Edith, but their love was forbidden. They overcame all of the odd and became his source of inspiration for Beren and Luthien in the Silmarillion. So much so, that the names Beren and Luthien are written on their tombstones, forever a fantasy love story.
And of course the movie will show the writing of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings which was written during World War II.
I wonder if the movie will show his author friends (and later nemesis), his love for language and desire to create a British Mythology.
Dome Karukoski is set to direct the movie. It will be his second English language movie. The writers David Gleeson and Stephen Beresford are mostly unknown so they better do a good job and give Tolkien the respect that it deserves.
If the trailer for this will be good and bring in the magic of Tolkien's work to the big screen, Tolkien fans will bring big box office numbers to this movie.
What do you think? Are you excited for the movie? Do we need a Tolkien movie?
