Star Wars: The Force Awakens vs. Avengers: Infinity War

Many Marvel fans want to see the throne of the third most successful movie in history taken from Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Unfortunately, that might not happened. Yes, Avengers: Infinity War now holds the title of the movie that reached one billion dollars the fastest. But it didn't win the title of the movie that reached $400,000,000 the fastest at the U.S. box office. Those are the most important box office in the world with all due respect to China. Star Wars: The Force Awakens has made almost a billion dollars in the U.S. alone and it looks like no movie in the near future will even come close.

From week to week Star Wars: The Force Awakens had a surprising drop of less than 40% from weekend to weekend at the U.S box office while Avengers: Infinity War dropped the usual mid-50% on it's first weekend. It looks like Avengers: Infinity War is already starting to slow, despite all that money from China that will soon arrive. The slowing down of Avengers: Infinity War will become more pronounced when Deadpool 2 will hit theaters in about 10 days. Star Wars: The Force Awakens dominated the box office and the number 1 spot for 4 entire weeks. So, I think that despite all of our hopes, will simply pass Marvel's The Avengers and might even take out Jurassic World, but not Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

I was just talking about this with a coworker. Nothing is going to come close to Force Awakens domestically. Domestic take was always the big standard for movies, not sure if that has changed. Disney was stupid when they said they were going to move Star Wars from the Christmas season because Avatar was planning on December releases. You are correct when Deadpool 2 comes out, the Avengers numbers will drop majorly. It seems like Hollywood is getting smart and putting out a big movie in February to take out the Christmas blockbuster (e.g. Deadpool & Black Panther) and have a good 2 months to make decent money.

Yes, domestic is still very important, but it's not great when movies don't make big money outside the US. The ratio should always be that a movie made more outside the U.S then in the U.S. For example The Force Awakens made $936,662,225 is the U.S. alone, but only slightly more outside of the U.S (where a lot more people live), it made $1,131,561,399 for a total of just 54.7% of the total income of the movie. Sure these are great numbers, but to be truly great you need to make Avatar level of money. It made just $760,507,625 in the U.S., similar to Black Panther U.S. box office numbers, but it made $2,027,457,462 outside of the U.S. alone, that's how much money there is outside of the U.S. Something no movie has been able to tap into ever since. Theoretically Avengers 3 could do that as it too is making a lot more money outside the U.S. than in the U.S., but I doubt that it can reach this level of box office success or even close.
