Taika Waititi the director of Thor: Ragnarok is now full of win. A common classic Hollywood mistake is not signing directors while they are cheap. After the amazing 96% score on rotten tomatoes for Thor: Ragnarok and an equality amazing 109$ million dollars opening weekend overseas Taika Waititi is now hot commodity and it’s on a question of who will sign him next. Whoever it will be, I am sure that right now, he is a lot more expensive than he was about a week ago. Also, I hope that Marvel signed him for a possible sequel from the beginning.

Before Thor: Ragnarok promotion campaign started he expressed interest in making a “stop-motion animation based around the semi-fantastical adventures of Michael Jackson's famous pet chimp”. That sounds like a terrible idea. I understand that it is meant to be an indie small movie, but I would much prefer that he will make awesome blockbusters. It does seem like he stopped talking about this movie and started talking about big movies.

In the Marvel arena Waititi expressed interest in two properties. The first property he expressed interest in making another Thor movie. This is not surprising considering the success he is having with Thor: Ragnarok - the great reviews and apparently the great working relationship he has with Marvel who gave him a lot of creative freedom during filming. That sounds like a great idea now that the Thor brand has been re-energized. The second property he expressed interest in making a Black Widow movie. More exactly a Black Widow Comedy. Making her origin story “funny” and “entertaining.” My first reaction is that it is a terrible, terrible idea. The second one is that it might be the only way we will ever get to see a Black Widow movie. I am referring to the Red Sparrow movie. Many people view it as a Black Widow origin story, as it covers a similar plot. So, in order for Marvel to make a Black Widow movie, it will have to be completely different. Why not got for a comedy, or how about not an origin story. If it’s not the origin story than there is no problem with it being a more comedic story. Marvel are the masters of injecting comedy into everything and making it work. That’s just what Waititi is interested inside of Marvel.

Ouside of Marvel there is Akira. Warner Bros. have been trying make a remake of the anime for a long time. Jordan Peele (the director of Get Out) was in talks to direct the movie, but those talks didn’t lead anywhere. In fact after the spectacular failure of Ghost in the Shell it seemed obvious that the remake will not be moving forward. But, Waititi has admitted that he is talks to direct the movie. There will be not whitewashing if he will direct the movie as he said he wants to cast Asian actors who are unfamiliar to audiences and that he wants to adapt the actual manga and not the anime. He seems like a perfect fit with the property as he is a true fan. But then again, this remake has been stuck in development hell for about 5 years, so it might never be made at all.

I’ll be very interested in seeing what he will do next. Whatever it will be, some studio is going to regret that they did not sign him sooner.
