This is actually a pretty big surprise. Tomb Raider staring Alicia Vikander came out in March, 2018 and it was not a big hit. It made only $58 million dollars in the U.S. and $274 million dollars total on a $94 million dollar budget. Considering advertising costs (usually as high as the production budget) this movie just broke even. However, there is also the ancillary market to consider. If the movie did very well there, it could show that audiences are interested in a sequel.
Sequel announcements can be used as an advertising tool. It's a way for studios to announce that they trust their movie so much that we're approving a sequel before it comes out or right after it comes out. But, it has been more than six months since the movie came out. I think that MGM is just hoping to get a franchise going since they don't have a lot going for them.
Personally I am happy. I really liked the movie and I think the sequel will do much better at the box office.
