X-Men: Dark Phoenix is written and directed by Simon Kinberg. Simon Kinberg is a long time writer and producer for the X-Men franchise, but this is his directorial debut. A different writer and a better director could have helped the movie. A lot. But this is not a directing or editing disaster like I thought it will be. The old – new familiar faces are back, James McAvoy as Professor Charles Xavier, Michael Fassbender as Erik Lehnsherr, Jennifer Lawrence as Raven, Nicholas Hoult as Hank McCoy, Sophie Turner as Jean Grey, Tye Sheridan as Scott Summers and Alexandra Shipp as Ororo Munroe. Jessica Chastain whom I hate also has a large mysterious role to play in this movie.
So yeah, the reviews have been hard on this movie and not rightfully so in my opinion. It is a solid and entertaining movie. Not all franchises can have an epic ending like Marvel beautifully closed their Infinity Saga with Avengers: Endgame. But this movie did feel like an ending. But, like all X-Men movies by Fox you really need to ignore the timeline and forget some of the things that happened in the previous movies. At this point I am used to it.
In this movie the X-Men are on a mission in outer space to save NASA astronauts. The mission goes wrong and Jean Grey absorbs the Phoenix Force. As the trailers showed you, Jean Grey has a hard time handling her new powers and she gets out of control and hurts innocent people causing a turmoil in the lines of the X-Men.
That third act was everything. I know it is all reshoots, but boy did it add a lot. First of all, even if the rise in action didn't let you know that these are reshoots, the fact that Jean Grey changes will let you know. Her powers go from this it is nice, to amazing. Sophie Turner did a pretty good job in this role. Which is nice considering her hair, outfit and makeup were pretty bad. But those Phoenix eyes are something to behold.
James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender are fantastic actors. They do a great job as always, even when their parts make no sense what so ever. Also their friendship is still interesting after all these years. As always, Jennifer Lawrence looks like she simply doesn't want to be there and it shows. I dislike Jessica Chastain and this movie is not what is going to make me like her, anemic will be a compliment to her performance in the movie. There is no amazing Quicksilver sequence in this movie, which disappointed me. Most of the other actors don't do much in this movie.
This is not a masterpiece of a movie that will go down in history as super bad or amazing. It is just a fun night at the theater will a little nostalgia. It is a bit that the X-Men Fox era is coming to a close in this not amazing manner as it should have been.
