As you know, I have dedicated my Fridays to talk about movies (now you know, if you didn't), and till the Academy Awards, we will be talking about favorites for the Best Picture category.
This week, we talk about Dunkirk. And this movie can, arguably, be regarded as the best movie in the past decade (it's that good).
Dunkirk is a 2017 war film written, directed and co-produced by the great Christopher Nolan. It depicts the May 1940 Dunkirk evacuation of World War II.
Dunkirk portrays the evacuation from three perspectives: land, sea and air.
Dunkirk contains little dialogue, as the director sought instead to create suspense from the cinematography and music.
The film has an ensemble cast which includes Fionn Whitehead, Tom Glynn-Carney, Jack Lowden, Harry Styles, Aneurin Barnard, Kenneth Branagh, Cillian Murphy, Mark Rylance and Tom Hardy.
Dunkirk is the highest grossing World War II film of all time, taking $525.6 million worldwide.
Critically acclaimed, it received praise for its screenplay, direction, musical score and cinematography with many calling it one of the greatest war films.
On Rotten Tomatoes, the film holds an approval rating of 93%.
At the 90th Academy Awards, it received eight nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director for Nolan, his first ever Oscar nomination for directing(about time!).
My Opinion
Dunkirk is beautiful to watch, and the sublime acting all around, with its powerful story makes it an all time great.
