Why would the GF return to the USA? The GF can see everybody talking about her on Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, and all over, on television, online, offline, and everywhere, around the world, and all the time, and they said the police had the GF but then they said they did not have the the GF and then they said she was in China and that she had a lot of money and was returning back to the USA. I have no idea... There are more questions about this case than there are answers. It will take the FBI a very long time to finish their investigation. Since this is an open case, they (FBI) are not going to reveal too much to the media. The main stream media tends to make up stuff to fill in the gap of a story.
