Tonight i was jamming with a friend who could not speak English, and i could not speak Thai, but we both knew how to play guitar. We played "The Eagles, Hotel California", he sang it in Thai and i sang the chorus in English, he knew the chorus enough to sing along with me. We then moved onto a "Thai" singer named "Sek Loso", he showed me the chords and he sang it. I could follow his rhythm. We the did another "Eagles", song, "The Best of Your Love", which i sang. We both got out our phones and dialled up "YouTube" and watched some videos of "Eric Clapton" doing "Wonderful tonight", he liked, "The Scorpions", song "Holiday" which we played and he sang it in Thai. We finished off our jam with "Dire Straits", Sultans of swing. The fact that we couldn't really hold a conversation did not impede our playing together and enjoying the evening. That is the beauty of music, it is the most powerful unifying thing that humanity shares. The thing that blows me away is how much we could actually get done, When i jam with friends and we speak the same language we don't get as much music covered as i did with him. Maybe not speaking the same language was a good thing, we couldn't argue about what we wanted to do.
