The Dangers of Gummy Vitamin Overdose

What’s up guys. This is taingera and today’s topic is going to be “what happens if your kid eats all your gummy vitamins and what should you do?” Before I go into this topic, I have to throw out a disclaimer that I am not your medical doctor and these are just my opinions from my research. You should only take this video content for educational purposes only.

Soo…let’s begin. As we all know, gummy vitamins are delicious. They taste sooo much better than the regular multivitamins. That’s probably why more and more companies are making these delicious gummy vitamins. They help kids can get their essential vitamins when they are not eating enough fruits, vegetables and other healthy foods. Who wants to eat that right? Yuck. j/k. Anyway, some of them are shaped like cartoon characters (like the Flinstone Gummies) and some of them are shaped like gummy bears (like Lil Critters). Sometimes it’s hard for a kid to distinguish what is candy and what is not. How cruel is that? And to make matters worse, they taste just like candy. What I really think the drug companies should do is make each gummy taste worse and worse after 2 doses (that’s if they can). Come on drug companies, that’s a challenge to you!! Let’s get back to the topic. So, what do you do when you enter your kid’s bedroom and find an empty bottle of your favorite gummy multi-vitamin beside him/her when you know you just bought that bottle yesterday? Do you get mad that your kid didn’t share with you? Do you get worried? Well, the answer should be the latter. First off, if your kid hasn’t vomited yet and is still conscious, try to figure out how many he has eaten and how long ago that happened. Regardless, if he doesn’t look well or if you are slightly concerned at all, Call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222.

They are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Tell them exactly what happened, how many your child ate, and when he ate the gummies. Tell them any symptoms your child has. It might be helpful to grab the bottle and tell them the ingredients. Since, multivitamins have a vast array of different types of vitamins and minerals, the symptoms can be very generalized. Some of the symptoms your kid might have are vision problems (from Vitamin A overdose), Constipation and Muscle Weakness (from Vitamin D overdose), Bleeding (from Vitamin E and K overdose), Skin flushing (from Vitamin B3), Numbness and difficulty walking (from Vitamin B6), Irregular Heartbeat (from Calcium), and nausea, vomiting and stomach pain (from Iron overdose). The one I would definitely look out for is the iron overdose because this can lead to bleeding, shock and death. Once you tell poison control everything you needed to tell them, they will help assess whether you need to take your child to ER or not. Some tips to help prevent this from occurring would be to buy multivitamins that are child-resistant caps, get the ones without iron if possible, store the bottle out of reach and out of site of the child, and get gummy vitamins that aren’t shaped like animals or cartoon characters.
