In this series of articles I will randomly pick a cd or DVD out of my collection and write a little bit about it. My collection has been in storage for some time but I love to go through it now that it is on display once again. The collection holds about 300+ cd’s and the same amount of DVD’s.
For today I picked a cd: Dookie by Green Day
Artist info:
Green Day is an American rock band formed in 1986 by lead vocalist and guitarist Billie Joe Armstrong and bassist Mike Dirnt. For much of the band's career, they have been a trio with drummer Tré Cool, who replaced John Kiffmeyer in 1990 prior to the recording of the band's second studio album, Kerplunk (1991).
Green Day was originally part of the punk scene at the DIY 924 Gilman Street club in Berkeley, California. The band's early releases were with the independent record label Lookout! Records. In 1994, their major label debut Dookie, released through Reprise Records, became a breakout success and eventually shipped over 10 million copies in the U.S. Green Day is credited alongside fellow California punk bands including Sublime, Bad Religion, The Offspring and Rancid with popularizing mainstream interest in punk rock in the United States.
Green Day has sold more than 85 million records worldwide. (source Wikipedia)
Album info:
Dookie is the third studio album by American rock band Green Day, released on February 1, 1994 by Reprise Records. It was the band's first collaboration with producer Rob Cavallo and its major record label debut. Dookie became a worldwide commercial success, peaking at number two on the US Billboard200 and charting in seven countries. The album helped propel Green Day, and even punk rock music into mainstream popularity.

My story with this album:
The first time I heard the number Basket Case I was sold and have been a Green Day fan since. I have all their studio albums in my physical collection (so it’s possible there will be another Green Day post in this series in the near future) and all of their album releases in my Spotify list.
In the days this album was released I was attending high school in a city about 10 KM from my home town and we got there by bicycle. So we had some commuting time twice a day five days a week, this was a great time to listen to some music with my friends on a Walkman or Discman with some crappie portable speakers attached to it. From the moment Dookie came out it was all we listened to for about a month and from there we started to explore more and more rock and punk albums, and me and a friend started hanging around with the local punk scene. Before these days it was a lot of hip hop and rap we played (which is still a go to genre for me).
Now days I still listen to this album almost every week in the car on the commute from work, playing it loud and singing along all the songs at the top of my lungs ignoring the strange looks from other drivers when I am giving it all on a (air)guitar solo in the car.
A Green Day highlight was a gift from my girlfriend two years ago, tickets for the Revolution Radio tour to go see them perform live at the Ziggo dome in Amsterdam. Damn that was a great concert!!
Back to Dookie, my all-time favourite song from this album still is Basket Case closely followed by the number She and all of the other tracks from this great album.
Hope you like this little post and idea of the series. If so follow me @tijntje.
