I'm Addicted to Repeating Same Songs Over and Over - A Curse and a Blessing

in music •  7 years ago

Does it happen to you? You're scrolling down your music player, trying to find something interesting, but neither song is the right one. Except the one you've been obsessing over the last few days or weeks. You hit play, turn on repeat and surrender to the beautiful sound wishing it to never stop. And so you listen to it over and over until you've listened to it so much it makes you want to kill yourself.

I'm one of those hopeless cases. I listen to some band, checking out their stuff, and then I discover that one song and decide it's so amazing it makes others pretty mediocre. So it goes in the loop. It's pretty brutal.

Usually, the song is catchy, maybe it has interesting rhythm, great singalong lyrics, unusual guitar or vocal part that begs me to get back to it over and over again. It's not an earworm, at least not in the beginning, in the obsessive phase. I try to move on and listen to band's other songs, but soon enough I'll go back to 'the one'.

The one song to rule them all.

And eventually, sometimes it's few days, sometimes it's few weeks, the inevitable happens - I get bored or annoyed by it, and start avoiding it in the foreseeable future. That's when I often discover another song from the band and decide that's actually the best one. And you know what happens next.

So it's usually like this:

  • Repeat over and over
  • People around you become annoyed by it
  • You tell everyone about it and how amazing it is
  • When someone interrupts you while listening, you have to play it from the beginning
  • At some point, you are so annoyed you just want to make it stop
  • You get over it the moment you discover new one

I guess repeating same songs over and over like there's no end to it happens when you find some similarity in it with your own life, at least that's what most of comments on this topic suggest. The thing is, I listen to a lot of folk, melodic death metal stuff that takes inspiration from ancient wanderers from the north, from warriors, from Tolkien's world and his characters. Does that mean I'm a reincarnated soul of an old Viking? Or an escapee from Middle Earth? (Its an interesting path to explore, so I'll be digging deeper into this in one of my future posts.)

Good thing about this is that every once in a while I would find some new gem from the band I'm listening that completely blows my mind. And I would become obsessed about it. On the other side, when its trial period of being my favorite song expires, I have to distance myself from it. Even when I return to it after a while, there's still bad taste about it, a memory of how annoying it once was.

I'm aware of this habit and I try to force myself to keep the repeat button turned off. Still, if you look at my music stats on last.fm you can see that just in the last month I have listened some songs over 100 times. That's right! It's pretty bad, guys.

What about you? Am I the only weirdo that experience this?

Not for nothing, but a common trait of highly successful people is they listen to the same song on repeat while working on these.

Oh, I read that somewhere! Great, maybe I'm on my path to success. :)

I am exactly the same sometimes, same song playing over and over again. I find that its not just music I'm this way with. Movies and TV-series too, not in this exact way, but too many times when I'm sitting down to watch a movie or show and relax, I can't find anything new that seems interesting enough for me to hit play. So I usually end up watching something I've seen before and that I know is good. Strange, but I guess it has something to do with familiarity and to "safe" it. Good post, keep up the good work!

Yes! I wanted to mention other forms of entertainment, but forgot. Same thing applies. Indeed, it probably has something to do with being safe and comfortable and sticking to what you know is high-quality. It feels good, but it's also limiting in a way. Thanks for the fantastic comment!

I do the same thing. I've reached a point that I have a hard time discovering new music so I listen to the same songs over and over. Right now it's an oldie Tears for Fears Shout. When I find the rare new song I love I listen to it until I'm sick of it.

Yes, lack of good music nowadays is good reason to stick with familiar good stuff. That's why I try to dig through older albums to find hidden gems I missed. I guess it's all about finding that perfect balance.

AH! I'm so glad that I'm not the only one who does this! I become addicted to songs, listen to them for some period of time, like you do, and then get sick of them.

Looks like there's quite a lot of people with this 'condition'. :)

I have this same problem and I listen to the same kinds of music as you! Sometimes for a 20-30 minute car ride I will listen to one song the whole way. 😩 It's pitiful. I, too, listen until I can't stand it anymore. And then I completely bypass it in my library for months after! Or if a band I love releases a new album, I will listen to that album and their old albums religiously for days and not listen to another artist once! I'm glad knowing I'm not the only weirdo that does this. I just get lost in my favorite music.

Looks like we have the same patterns. :) We surrender to whatever we enjoy in the moment and disregard everything else. Whether it be song, band or a genre. It's nice to meet more people who do this!

Music players need a temporary 6 star setting.
So, that it knows to play it lots while on random.

The songs we repeat are often about the emotions they stir within us. The emotional well being is important to us. The music talks directly to this layer. And often, it is not sunshine and roses that we need, it is the hunt, or the melancholy, or the blood boiling that our soul craves.

Keep that repeat button firmly pressed.

Well said. We are emotional beings and letting our emotions guide us might not be that bad after all.

I do this constantly nowadays for some reason. I never did this when I was younger and I always was annoyed when other people did this. Now it happens all the time and I sometimes think I might be on the spectrum.

It has it's benefits and downsides, but I guess life would be easier without it. Thanks for the comment!

we all do it!

Probably, some more, some less. I guess it's OK when it's under control!
