Music Disks: MOD/Tracker Albums of the Amiga Era

in music •  7 years ago  (edited)

Imagine this, music nerds: It's the 1990s. Instead of popping a cassette tape into your boom box, or even a CD, you instead slide a 3.4" diskette into your home computer. No music player software is needed, it's included on the diskette and auto-executes as soon as the computer finishes reading the disk contents.

Then it launches, and you're greeted with an attractive looking splash screen with WinAmp-like controls for playing the tracks on the diskette. How is this possible? A single 3.4" diskette won't even fit a whole MP3 in most cases. The answer? It's not MP3, it's MOD.

MOD is similar to MIDI in that both simply consist of instruction sets for a computer to play a song using pre-recorded samples for each instrument. It differs from MIDI in that it can create a much more complex sound. More channels, wider range, and embedded WAV samples for voices.

A format of this type was used for the N64 to create as complex and rich of music as possible despite the space limitations of cartridges. It was also the format used for Atari Jaguar, for the same reason. The soundtrack to Tempest 2000 for example was all MOD and wicked enough to have come out on CD as its own album:

But this isn't just a general MOD music appreciation article. The focus of course is on the MOD compilation diskettes that were distributed at scene demo parties for use with Amiga home computers. So here, for your consideration, is a playlist of some of the best Amiga music disks:

Ooh yeah, that's the good shit. Let those 90's as fuck beats soak into your pores. Do you feel rejuvenated? Are you not entertained? You know where to go when you need your fix of obscure goodies like this, right? They all come crawling back. (⌐■‿■)

Incidentally if you just want to load up on MOD files and don't care about the retro computing aspect, I recommend The Mod Archive.

Hehehehe mehn this is pure nostalgia. You just brought back some lovely memories. Wish B I could go back in time. Technology has made life boring I must say.

@alex, this is some good throwback mehn.

i guess if the had told them that something bigger was coming, probably they would feel like they had seen it all.

thanks to technological advancement

@alex, sometimes i really wish i could stay a hundred years more to really see what the world would look like and probably tell the stories of how it was during "my time"

Some good old beat. Music at its purest stage not like now that we have so many polluted music. It’s an hour plus long so I guess I will have to open it in another tab and listen to this all night long at least till I hit my bed. Bless your heart for sharing , it is indeed rejuvenating.

you just brought back some old and beautiful memories.

i remember how my bad guarded his player like it was one of his kids. we weren't allowed to go close to it. even the cleaning, he does it himself

This is funny, in the 90s they never thought we could have the technology we have today, no one dreamt of the way its easier to inter connect devices the way we do now

You have a minor grammatical mistake in the following sentence:

The soundtrack to Tempest 2000 for example was all MOD and wicked enough to have come out on CD as it's own album.
It should be its own instead of it's own.

Thank you! You did a good job, robot.

apparently already in the 90's already there is technology like this.

I'm a total music nerd. I can listen to one song over and over again for hours))

Awesome! I still do stuff using a tracker. Sunvox is free, awesome and 90s inspired!

Lol Alex you were a groovy man, how did you listen to so much music and still have time to write excellently though?

It is possible to listen to music while writing at the same time

That must involve a whole lot of mind control, focus

Oh my god, I felt a lot of nostalgia just imagining the sound. Although compared to current music is simpler, it is still quite entertaining and relaxing

I'm surprised your old pc even works. I tried to boot up my old quad 6600 and it does that annoying start up and shut down business. My old gtx 8800 doesn't even work, it just makes a loud humming noise. I guess you're just a lucky guy...

Time for a comeback!

Retro sound friend, that old computer hides magic for you, despite the time, the components are perfectly cared, after the atari 2600 with its wooden console, these disketes were very durable, greetings

funny how even with very little devices, you can take your music player anywhere you wanna go o.

wow! Times have really changed you know

That music is horrible LoL. Interesting how it works though. I had no idea this was a thing.

Don't judge chiptunes until you've heard the work of Tim Follin

I checked out the link and as far as 90's video game music goes it is awesome!

The 90's dance was just too much for me though.

These throwbacks to the 90s always feel so good! I was born in the very beginning of the 90s and all my memories from this time are from when I was a little kid. Must say I had a pretty good childhood and the associations with that time always brings this weird bliss.

Nice beats. I listen to something like that quite often (Not exactly that style but very similar).

Oh yeah! Love this type of music. I first came across this type of music back in the 2000s and have been a fan ever since. One of the best sources for the Tracker scene at the time was Modplug.com. I installed a copy of tracker and player on my laptop at that time and rendered some of the tunes to MP3s. I loaded the songs on to my MP3 player and was in music heaven.

Now a days, I enjoy tracks using Xmp Mod Player for Android. Thanks for this fun post.

Today we are in a really big development
Music listening is very easy
Old was difficult
Technology has changed a lot in our lives

Old is Gold, I still miss that it was one of my favorite thing at childhood.
I wish i could play music using CD in that speaker.
Thank You for remembering some good things.

incredible ... it looks like this technology has always existed. very interesting

Technology are developing day by day as well music equipment

Best years of my life 90s.

Good old memories. Hehn
Man you just brought back the old times of long quality music.

I heard this song a lot of sounds a few days ago even I had to see a doctor in a while :D

I've sent a letter to NASA to know all these things, and if they give me feedback in a few days, I'll understand how to use them ! :p
