Tina Turner, born Anna Mae Bullock on November 26, 1939, in Brownsville, Tennessee, was an American-born Swiss singer who found success in the rhythm-and-blues, soul, and rock genres in a career that spanned five decades.
Her parents were struggling sharecroppers who split up when she was 11 years old. She lived with her maternal grandmother in Nutbush, Tennessee, after being abandoned by her mother and rejected by her father when he remarried.
As a child, she dedicated herself to odd jobs, including being a nurse's aide, a maid, a cheerleader, and a basketball player.
Tina Turner began her music career with Ike Turner's Kings of Rhythm in 1957, and first appeared on record under the name Little Ann.
Tina Turner was known as the "Queen of Rock 'n' Roll," and first found fame as the lead singer of the duo Ike & Tina Turner, before launching a massively successful career as a solo artist. Her live performances were a musical spectacle comparable to the style of James Brown and the Famous Flames. There was never any doubt that Tina Turner was the star of the Ike and Tina Turner Revue, the electrifying performer audiences came to see.
Tina Turner left immortal classics in the painful resignation of "A Fool in Love," the sublime envelopment of "River Deep, Mountain High," and the frenetic celebration of "Proud Mary". Her voice remains today not only as a woman's testimony against a hard-and-competitive environment but also as the symbol of a sensitivity that will undoubtedly continue to inspire generations of musicians and music lovers.
Following her split from Ike in the 1970s, she launched what became known as "one of the greatest comebacks in music history". In the early eighties, thanks to hits like "What's love got to with it" and "We Don't need another hero (Thunderdome)," she rose from the ashes as a pop-rock diva. Critics called her the "Queen of Rock And Roll" and the "Acid Queen" after a song by Pete Townshend. Rock monsters like Mick Jagger and David Bowie revered her.
In her autobiography "I, Tina," she recounted the hardships she endured alongside the abusive Ike Turner and how she overcame adversity. It was as Tina experienced in her flesh the hell of her mother Zelda when she fled from a harsh husband.
Tina Turner's powerful new book "Happiness Becomes You" reveals the joyful wisdom behind her inspirational life story and shows how you can find happiness.
Tina Turner died on May 24, 2023, at the age of 83.
