Breaking News! It was announced last night that the #MHKmusic festival MXMW (Mid by MidWest) will be back for it’s second year in a row. MXMW is designed to be an alternative to Country Stampede, so the date is set for June 24th. Expect to hear more about that soon. If you are interested in donating time, talent or finances towards that effort, MHK MUSIC SCENE can help put you in contact with the organizers!

Also keep an eye out, because starting next week we will be moving these updates to a dedicated website! From now on all your #MHKmusic updates can be found at www.mhkmusicscene.com

This week kicks off a string of excellent shows you won’t want to miss! So check out the shows below, and look again next week for the rest!

@7:00pm Philosophy of Lions at Bluemont Lounge

Philosophy of Lions is a Flint Hills fusion, New-Americana band featuring catchy rhythms, thoughtful vocals and dynamics that range from a purr to a full on roar. A solid drum, bass, guitar foundation interplays with saxophone stylings.

Free Entry

@9:00pm Moreland & Arbuckle at Auntie Mae’s

Guitarist Aaron Moreland describes their music as “gritty blues and roots rock from the heartland.” Moreland, harmonicist/vocalist Dustin Arbuckle and drummer Kendall Newby bring fierce electric fury and unrelenting rock energy to their original songs, inspired by raw Delta and Mississippi Hill Country blues. Their songs are expertly executed with musical muscle and fifth-gear urgency. When they perform more traditional blues, they play with the same decisive command. With each of their six previous releases, the band has grown musically and lyrically, creating a signature sound while earning a large and loyal worldwide fan base. Their legendary raw and raucous live shows are played with wild abandon. The New York Post says Moreland & Arbuckle have “a raw juke joint exuberance with a dirt-under-the fingernails garage band attack.”

$5 Cover/Tickets

Friday 4/14:

@7:15pm Mark Stuart at Our HOUSE (direct message for address)

After many years on the Americana/Folk circuit, Stuart has cultivated a
very rounded performance. His show consists of storytelling, flashy guitar
“chops”, and songs that seem to draw from his rock, blues, country, and folk
music roots. Potluck at 6pm, music at 7:15pm, BYOB.

Donations Suggested (All proceeds go to the artist)

@7:30pm Øystein Baadsvik Recital at All Faiths/Danforth Chapel

In addition to Baadsvik’s notable performance schedule, a cult-like following has begun thanks to postings of his performances on YouTube. One of Baadsvik’s most well-known works is Fnugg (Norwegian for something small or a snowflake. Fnugg was originally written for solo Tuba and features a variety of unique performance skills, including “lip beats” and multiphonics. It was later modified, with a major addition for either brass band or concert band and was titled Fnugg Blue. His YouTube performance of Fnugg Blue was very theatrical in nature, with dancing and clapping from the audience.

Free Entry

@9:00pm Gnarly Davidson, Headlight Rivals, Pale Tongue, and Dropjaw at Church of Swole (direct message for details)

Gnarly Davidson is LFK’s premier Beer-Rock band; Headlight Rivals is MHK’s hardest working Rock n’ Roll band; Pale Tongue is a Psychadelic/Soothsayer Rock band from LFK; Dropjaw is the moniker of North American rap rap rap sensation Kory Andrew Pedersen.

Free Entry (donations suggested for traveling bands)

Saturday 4/15:

@7:00pm Truckstop Honeymoon at Auntie Mae’s

Hollering with all their hearts over a five string banjo and a doghouse bass, Truckstop Honeymoon live the life they sing about. Touring across three continents with four kids and a truck load of songs, Katie and Mike West tell stories about the strangeness of everyday life. Their music combines elements of bluegrass, music hall jazz and straight up rock’n’roll. Vaudevillian wit and showmanship spike their energetic live shows, while the fearless honesty of their songs touches the hearts of listeners around the world.

$5 Cover

@7:00pm Jackyl at RC McGraws

Equal parts hard rock, heavy metal and Southern rock, Jackyl formed in 1991 and brought rock ‘n’ roll back — back to its down-to-earth, wild, fun-loving origins. Full of spit and swagger — and a “dirty” sense of humor to boot — Jackyl quickly earned a deal with Geffen Records. Jackyl’s live shows were already legendary before the ink dried on the Geffen contract.

$25 Tickets (advance); $30 Tickets (at the door)
