The mother of all internet radio - SomaFM

There are thousands of internet radio stations on the web. Some are very specialised, some commercial infested, some unstable in the streaming. Finding a station that is non of that, is not easy. Especially if your musical taste is outside the mainstream, like mine.

But I was lucky. Over 15 years ago I found
SomaFM

Internet radio was still in its infantcy then, connections slow and unreliable. But SomaFM's founder Rusty Hodge managed to improve the service step by step.
And that was done without a subsription, and commercial free ever since. But the best for me on SomaFM always was: their excellent choice of music, especially on the channels that are outside the usual main stream taste.

Today SomaFM is perhaps one of the most widely known internet radio stations around. Based in San Francisco (what better place could there be?) they supply quality music to the world. In a statement they say:
"The station is going strong. We get over 5 million "listener hours" a month (aprox 2 million US, 3 million international), which makes us one of the larger indie internet-only broadcasters. But we're not looking to increase our audience by playing more mainstream music. We look for music and formats that aren't available on commercial radio, or formats that are "not being done right" as Rusty puts it. "

Currently they broadcast on 34 channels 24/7.
