Ethno/World/Balkan Music - Vlatko Stefanovski on Guitar and Theodosii Spassov on *Kaval*

in music •  7 years ago  (edited)

Both of these musicians are worshiped as living gods here in the Balkans. Stefanovski is well known for his work with the mostly '80s Macedonian group Leb i Sol (Bread and Salt), whereas Spassov (a Bulgarian who shares my birthday) is a master of the kaval, a traditional Balkan wooden flute. His music has blown me away so many times live, making sounds that I never would have thought possible with his instrument! Anyway, they had a group about a decade ago called Balkanski Kone (Balkan Horses), which was a real treat for the heart and soul to listen to. I believe this is from a concert after the group split, but it gives you an idea of the ethereal quality expressed by Balkan folklore, which is nothing but breathtaking. Hope you enjoy!

Lyrics:

"Gypsy Song"

Shutka and Topaana have a problem:
That they aren't in India
So Krishna can see what life is like
In a happy vale

I've been around, been to the West
All the way to Germany
To earn a slice of bread for me
And for my family

Wish I had [enough], but I still don't
I would buy a white horse
I would ride it, day and night
In real life ... in real life and in my dreams

We all have our own star
That follows us all our lives
When it shines bright, man is lucky
When it fades ... unhappiness

Wish I had, but I still don't
Have [enough] to buy a white horse
I would ride it, day and night
In real life, in real life and in my dreams (x2)

Wish I had [enough], but I still don't
To buy a bed for us
For you to fall asleep in
A thousand, thousand and one nights
